Corresponding Member Alexander V. KILCHEVSKY

Alexander Vladimirovich Kilchevsky (born on August 17, 1955, Gorki, Mogilev Region) is a biotechnology scientist. Prof. Kilchevsky is Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (2003), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Agrarian Sciences of the Republic of Belarus (1996-2002), Doctor of Biological Sciences (1994), Professor (1995). He has been awarded with the Republic of Belarus Education Excellence Award. Alexander Kilchevsky is Honorary Professor of the University of Warmia and Mazury (Poland), Agricultural-Technical Academy in Olsztyn (Poland).

Prof. Kilchevsky graduated from the Belarusian State Agricultural Academy (BSAA) (1977). Since 1978 he worked as assistant, since 1984 as senior teacher, since 1987 Associate Professor, since 1988 as Head of Department at the Belarusian State Agricultural Academy. From 2004 to 2014 he was Director of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Since 2014 Prof. Kilchevsky has served as Chief Scientific Secretary of NAS of Belarus.

Alexander Kilchevsky is a well-known scientist in the field of biotechnology, genetics and plant breeding. He established at the BSAA the first Department of Biotechnology in Belarus, the largest Biotechnology Centre in Belarus, organized a large-scale manufacture of sanitized planting materials of plants. He made a considerable contribution to the development of plant biotechnology. In the field of genomics Prof. Kilchevsky conducted research on DNA-certification and DNA-marking of genotypes of tomatoes, peppers, sugar beet and potatoes. He also developed methods of marker-accompanying breeding and genetic certification for these cultures.

Prof. Kilchevsky is the author of over 360 research papers, including 7 monographs, 3 coursebooks, 21 breeder certificates, 1 patent. He is a coauthor of the first coursebook on biotechnology in plant cultivation in Belarus (2005). He is also the initiator, editor and coauthor of the 4-volume monograph “Genetic bases of plant cultivation” unique in the CIS. He regularly made oral reports abroad at international congresses on biotechnology, genetics and plant selection, gave a lecture course on biotechnology at the National School of Agronomy of Toulouse (France). He supervised 1 Doctor of Sciences and 17 PhDs. Alexander Kilchevsky managed an international project within the INTAS programme, implemented two contracts on biotechnology with Venezuela. He initiated establishment at the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Centre for Genomic Biotechnology, National DNA Bank, Centre “Genome”.

Prof. Kilchevsky is actively engaged in research and organizational activities, having participated in development and management of a range of state biotechnology programs: he was in charge of scientific support for state company “Biotechology”, he was co-manager of the state program of oriented fundamental research “New Biotechnology”, he manages the subprogram “Genomics” of the program “Fundamental Bases of Biotechnology”. Alexander Kilchevsky is a member of the Bureau and Presidium of NAS of Belarus, Chairman of NASB Editorial Commission, member of the state commission on science and technology policy affiliated with the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus.

Prof. Kilchevsky is Chairman of the Belarusian Society of Geneticists and Selectors, National Coordinator for EBTNA (European Biotechnology Thematic Network Association), Head of the National Contact Point for Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology in the EU Framework Program, member of the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA), member of the Bureau of the Scientific Council of the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research, Chairman of Experts Council of the Highest Attestation Commission, Chairman of Doctors Council in the specialties “genetics”, “molecular genetics”, “biotechnology”, member of editorial boards of a range of journals.

Alexander Kilchevsky has been awarded with the Francisk Skarina medal, prizes of NASB, Belarus Education Excellence Prize. He has been awarded with honorary diplomas of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, NAS of Belarus, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Highest Attestation Commission, the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research, N.I.Vavilov medal, S.I.Zhegalov medal. He is Honorary professor of the University of Warmia and Mazury (Poland), Honorary Doctor of the Belarusian State Agricultural Academy. He was granted a special premium of the President of the Republic of Belarus for his prominent contribution to the social and economic development of the Republic of Belarus.
