Wetlands use to be discussed by experts from Germany, Belarus and Russia at NAS of Belarus on November 16, 2015
On November 16, 2015 the NASB Scientific and Practical Centre for Bioresources in cooperation with the Michael Succow Foundation for the Protection of Nature (Germany) will hold the international scientific workshop “The use of biomass and balance of greenhouse gases from natural and re-waterlogged lowland wetlands”.
The workshop will involve the leading scientists and experts in the area of wetland ecosystems sustainable management from the leading research centers and universities of Germany, Czech Republic, Russia and Belarus.
The event seeks to provide a platform for scientific community to discuss and share experience in wetland ecosystems sustainable use, assessment of greenhouse gases emission from wetlands and drained peatlands, use of wetland vegetation for biofuel and industrial raw materials. The workshop will put special emphasis on implementing in Belarus the paludiculture concept (using rewetted peatlands biomass for energy and raw materials) as an economically and environmentally better alternative to wetland ecosystems drainage.
Physics of shock waves, combustion and detonation discussed during 4th Minsk international colloquium at A.V.Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute
The 4th Minsk international colloquium held at the NASB A.V.Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute on November 9-12, 2015 focused on such important topics as dynamics, transport and elementary processes in systems involving shock waves, chemical and phase transformations as well as physical kinetics, heat transfer and transport processes at the micro- and nanoscale. The reports also dealt with the mechanics of liquids, gases and plasma.

Public lecture on dark energy nature to be given by famous Russian scientist at NAS of Belarus
Why does the universe have matter and does not have antimatter? How varied is the finite lifetime of black holes? What do we expect from elementary particle physics in the next ten years? These and other questions will be answered at a public lecture by Valery Rubakov, one of the world’s leading experts in the area of quantum field theory, elementary particle physics and cosmology, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The lecture will focus on the most fascinating mysteries of the universe: dark matter and dark energy.
The event will take place at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on November 13, 2015.
Chief Scientific Secretary Alexander Kilchevsky makes a report at Azerbaijan NAS Genetic Resources Institute
The NASB Chief Scientific Secretary Alexander Kilchevsky has visited the Institute of Genetic Resources, Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, where he met Director of the Institute, ANAS Corresponding Member Zeynal Akparov. The meeting was held within the framework of the 70th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences celebrations.
Zeynal Akparov told Alexander Kilchevsky about the history of establishment and structure of the institute, its research activities, the achievements of the institute’s scientists as well as the projects implemented in cooperation with Belarusian institutes.
Alexander Kilchevsky expressed his gratitude for the hospitality and long-standing cooperation, told about the improvements in the material and technical basis of the research institutions of Belarus, in particular, the NASB Institute of Genetics and Cytology, as well as about new modern laboratories being established and the research being conducted. Alexander Kilchevsky put special emphasis on the research activities being carried out using new generation sequencers at the NASB institutes and the ANAS Genetic Resources Institute. Also the possibilities of collaboration in the area of complex and comparative research and efficient use of genetic resources in breeding were discussed during the meeting.
14th international conference “Development of informatization and the state system of scientific and technical information” to be held at NASB United Institute of Informatics Problems on November 19, 2015
The annual conference "Development of informatization and the state system of scientific and technical information" will be held by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus with participation of the State Committee on Science and Technology and other institutions and organizations, and will focus on the analysis of the status and problems of development of informatization and the state system of scientific and technical information in the Republic of Belarus, development of new approaches to scientific and methodological support for informatization development, information and communication technologies and information infrastructure of Belarus, implementation of the Strategy for Information Society Development in Belarus.

On November 12-13, 2015 NASB Institute of Philosophy to hold 2nd international scientific conference “Intellectual culture of Belarus: knowledge management within the framework of social and economic modernization tasks”
On November 12-13, 2015 the Institute of Philosophy, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, will hold the second international scientific conference “Intellectual culture of Belarus: knowledge management within the framework of social and economic modernization tasks”.
It is expected that the conference will involve experts from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and Poland and other countries, government agencies representatives, diplomats, business executives, experts at large Belarusian innovation companies and education specialists, the leading philosophy scientists, methodologists, sociologists, economists and young researchers.
Deputy Chairman of Presidium, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Sergei Kilin takes part in 7th World Science Forum
Deputy Chairman of Presidium, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Sergei Kilin has participated in the 7th World Science Forum, which took place in Budapest on November 4-7, 2015. The forum was organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Council for Science (ICSU), the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC).
The forum is held biannually and acts as a platform to exchange experience and knowledge between science community and public. This year’s event focused on the theme “The Enabling Power of Science”. The event gathered about 900 participants from more than 100 countries. At the opening ceremony the participants were welcomed by President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Laszlo Lovasz and Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban, among the speakers there were many representatives of civil society and policy-makers engaged in developing science and education policies.
Deputy Chairman of NASB Presidium took part in the forum and held negotiations on development of collaboration between the NAS of Belarus and other scientific institutions. Now an agreement for strengthening the cooperation between the NAS of Belarus and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is being prepared.
NAS of Belarus delegates take part in closing ceremony of Days of Belarusian Culture in Latvia
On October 31, 2015 the closing ceremony of the Days of Belarusian Culture dedicated to the 525th anniversary of the first Belarusian printer Francysk Skaryna’s birth was held at the Zielonis concert hall of the National Library of Latvia (Riga). Alexander Lukashanets, Vice-Director for Science of the NASB Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research, NASB Corresponding Member, gave a speech about Francysk Skaryna at the closing ceremony, stressing the significance of such events for establishing and strengthening the cultural links between the neighboring nations, broadening the knowledge of Belarusian history, language and literature in Latvia.
NASB Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research hosts International scientific conference “The Belarusian language in the 21st century: main trends of development” on October 28-29, 2015
On October 28-29, 2015 the NASB Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research hosted the international scientific conference “The Belarusian language in the 21st century: main trends of development” (dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Academician A.Podluzhny).
The conference involved linguists from Belarus, Poland, Russia and Ukraine. The opening of the conference included speeches by Academician-Secretary of NASB Department of Humanities and Arts Alexander Kovalenya, Director of the NASB Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research Alexander Lokotko and the scientist’s relatives and friends.
The Centre’s Vice-Director for Science Alexander Lukashanets, Head of the Centre’s Modern Belarusian Language Division Valentsina Rusak, Head of Speech Recognition and Synthesis Laboratory of the NASB United Institute of Informatics Problems Yuri Getsevich gave reports at the plenary session.
The conference included four sections. The speakers stressed the considerable contribution of Academician Podluzhny to the development of Belarusian linguistics, discussed the problems of modern Belarusian language science.
Chairman of NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov meets World Bank Country Manager for Belarus Young Chul Kim
On October 30, 2015 Chairman of NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov held negotiations with World Bank Country Manager for Belarus Young Chul Kim. The negotiations focused on grant support of scientific research in the Republic of Belarus and science commercialization. Special emphasis was put on the necessity to create a complex environment of support for development of the science-based sector of the economy. As a specific example, the parties considered cooperation within the framework of establishing the BelBiograd National Science and Technology Park, one of the systemic clusters expected to be set up at NAS of Belarus.
8th Belarusian Antarctic expedition starts at NAS of Belarus
On October 29, 2015 at the extended session of the NASB Presidium Bureau, involving directors of the NASB organizations, the 8th Belarusian Antarctic expedition was started. This team will be comprised of five men, for all of whom, expect the team leader, it is the first expedition.
As Chairman of NASB Presidium said at the meeting, “The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus pays great attention to Antarctic research. Not only is research funded, but also building our own infrastructure in the Antarctic”. Vladimir Gusakov added that on October 20, 2015 the first unit of the Belarusian Antarctic station was presented. On behalf of all the scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov wished the expedition members strong health, success in their work and optimism.
School of Young Researchers inaugurated at NAS of Belarus
On October 29, 2015 the School of Young Researchers was inaugurated at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The event involved students of Minsk secondary schools who were welcomed by the members of the Council of Young Scientists of NAS of Belarus, representatives of Minsk Palace of Children and Youth, NASB Researchers Training Institute.
The School of Young Scientists is a project of the above mentioned institutions aimed at encouraging school students to be involved in science and research.
During the inauguration ceremony NASB Chief Scientific Secretary Alexander Kilchevsky expressed hope and confidence that the school students who gathered at NAS of Belarus that day had taken their first significant step into science, which would continue at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, because, according to Alexander Kilchevsky, it is precisely “youth who makes science”. Chief Scientific Secretary assured that NAS of Belarus would always be glad to assist the young generation at all stages of their educational and research activities.
8th International scientific conference “Regulation of growth, development and productivity of plants” starts at V.F.Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany
The conference “Regulation of growth, development and productivity of plants” has been held for the eighth time (since 1999). This year the conference has gathered scientists from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, China, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan.
As Academician Nikolai Laman, Chair of the Science Committee of the 8th international scientific conference, said at the opening ceremony, “Plant physiology is a science, which has existed for more than 200 years. It has accumulated considerable experimental data on the physical and chemical organization of plants, self-regulation of functional systems, the adaptation of the plant organism to various stresses, becoming the theoretical basis of modern agriculture”. Due in no small part to these achievements “today we are involved in a great food revolution in the world with the rates of food production being higher than the rates of population growth”.
NASB Institute of Philosophy takes part in UN 70th anniversary celebrations
The NASB Institute of Philosophy, the Brest State University named after A.S.Pushkin, the Department of Public Information of the UN Office in Belarus a national workshop “The UN’s 70th anniversary and the ways of further strengthening friendship and cooperation between nations”.
The event was held on October 26-27, 2015 in Brest. The participants of the workshop discussed the milestones of the United Nations Organization history, its civilizational mission, collaboration with the BSSR and the Republic of Belarus.
Humanities scholars hold a press conference under the theme “Updating research in the field of the humanities”
On October 27, 2015 the press conference under the theme “Updating research in the field of the humanities” was held at press room of the House of Press.
The event involved Alexander Kovalenya, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Humanities and Arts, NASB Corresponding Member; Alexander Lokotko, Director of the NASB Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research, NASB Academician; Alexander Lukashanets, the Centre’s Vice Director for Science, Director of the branch “Institute of Language and Literature named after Yakub Kolas and Yanka Kupala”, NASB Corresponding Member; Vyacheslav Danilovich, Director of the NASB Institute of History, and Anatoly Lazarevich, Director of NASB Institute of Philosophy.
The participants of the conference presented information on the system of clusters (centres) in the advanced areas of science to be set up at the facilities of the research institutions. Seven clusters are to be established within the Department of Humanities and Arts. At the Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research the International Centre for Belarusian Culture, the International School of Belarusian Language and Literature and the Republican Laboratory of Historical and Cultural Heritage will be established. The Institute of History will open International School for Historical and Archeological Research, the Institute of Sociology will launch the Republican Research Centre for Sociological Monitoring. The Republican Centre for Fundamental and Practical Philosophy will open at the Institute of Philosophy and the Leading Republican Economic School will open at the Institute of Economics.
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko expresses condolences on death of NASB Academician Nikolai Borisevch
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has expressed condolences to the relatives, friends and colleagues of Hero of Socialist Labor, Merited Scientist of the Republic of Belarus, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Nikolai Borisevich in connection with his death.
“All his life is an example of labor merit, devotion to science and his homeland - Belarus. The name of Nikolai Borisevich is closely associated with prominent national achievements in the field of spectroscopy and luminescence, infrared technologies, laser physics, which received high international recognition. His hard work for the benefit of his homeland was celebrated with honorable awards of the Republic of Belarus”, says the condolences message.
Academician Nikolai A. Borisevich dies
Belarusian science has suffered a great loss. On October 25, 2015 at the age of 92 died Nikolai Alexandrovich Borisevich, an outstanding scientist in the field of molecular spectroscopy, luminescence, laser physics and infrared technology, Doctor of Physical-Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Russian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of several foreign academies, a prominent state and public figure, manager of Soviet and Belarusian science, veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of Socialist Labor.
Nikolai Alexandrovich Borisevich was born on September 23, 1923 in Luchnoy Most Village, Berezino District, Minsk Region in a rural family. From 1941 to 1944 he was a member of the underground Komsomol group and a soldier at partisan unit 152, since 1944 he was an artillerist in the Red Army who reached Berlin. For the courage he displayed during the war Nikolai Borisevich was awarded with two Orders of the Red Star, Orders of the Patriotic War, 1st and 2nd class and several medals.
Nikolai Borisevich graduated from Belarusian State University in 1950. He was President of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR for 18 years from 1969 to 1987. His name is associated with the rapid development in the BSSR of physics, mathematics, informatics, chemistry, Earth sciences, photobiology and other sciences. He initiated establishment of design bureaus, experimental and industrial manufactures, regional research centers, development of defense-related works at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Under his management the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR became one of the best academies of the Soviet Union, BSSR scientists occupied the leading positions in the world in a range of major scientific areas.
The contribution of Nikolai Borisevich to development of optics, spectroscopy and their applications is invaluable. He is the author of more than 600 publications. For his outstanding scientific achievements Nikolai Borisevich was awarded with the Lenin Award, State Prizes of the USSR and the Republic of Belarus. He supervised more than 30 PhDs, 12 of the scientists he supervised are Professors, among them there are 3 Academicians and 1 Corresponding Member.
The contribution of Nikolai Borisevich to development of science has been celebrated with honorable state awards. He was awarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, Order of the October Revolution, three Orders of Lenin, Order of Friendship (Russian Federation), Order of Francysk Skaryna. He was given the title of Hero of Socialist Labor and awarded with the Order of Lenin and the Sickle and Hammer golden medal in accordance with the Decree of the Presidium, Supreme Council of the USSR of December 27, 1978.
Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology delegation visiting NAS of Belarus
The delegation of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology headed by President Chau Van Minh is visiting Belarus on October 24-29, 2015. The main goal of the visit is discussing the joint projects implementation and negotiating priority areas of cooperation for 2016-2018.
On October 26, 2015 the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology delegates held negotiations with the leaders of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology Chau Van Minh noted that the parties were particularly interested in collaborating in the following areas: materials science, ecology, laser technologies.
During its stay in Belarus the delegation is also to visit several research institutions of NAS of Belarus.

V.F.Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany to hold 8th International scientific conference “Regulation of growth, development and productivity of plants”
On October 28-30, 2015 the NASB V.F.Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany in cooperation with the Belarusian Public Association of Plant Physiologists will conduct the 8th international scientific conference “Regulation of growth, development and productivity”.
The main topics of the conference are growth, development and productivity of plants, phytocenoses and artificial agroecosystems; photosynthesis, respiration, mineral nutrition and water metabolism of plants, signaling systems of higher plants cells; stress and adaptation in plants, enhancing their stability with the use of physiologically active substances and biotechnological methods.
