On 16 November 2017, election of foreign members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was held at a session of the NASB General Meeting. As a result of an open ballot, 6 foreign members and 2 honorary members of the NAS of Belarus were elected.
The elected foreign members of the NAS of Belarus are as follows:
Chunli Bai, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a famous world-class scientist in the field of nanotechnology and scanning tunneling microscopy; Fidel Angel Castro Diaz-Balart, Vice-President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, Scientific Advisor of the State Council of the Republic of Cuba, a famous scientist in the field of theoretical physics, nuclear physics and energy, quantum theory, nanotechnology; Baiba Rivza, President of the Latvian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, an outstanding scientist in the field of economics, agricultural entrepreneurship, risks, regional development and market research; Alexander M. Sergeev, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician of the RAS, an outstanding scientist in the field of laser physics, high-power laser complexes, femtosecond optics, the theory of nonlinear wave phenomena, plasma physics and biophotonics; Steven Chu, Professor of Physics, Molecular and Cellular Physiology, Stanford University (USA), Nobel Prize in Physics (1997) for the development of the method of laser cooling of atoms; Henry Markram, Professor of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, Head of the project on computer modeling of the human brain, an outstanding scientist in the field of neurophysiology.
The elected honorary members of the NAS of Belarus are as follows:
Pyotr I. Klimuk, a pilot-cosmonaut, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics named after Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Academician of the International Academy of Informatics, Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Astronautics; Yusuf Khwaja Hamied, Cipla Limited Chairman, one of India's leading scientists in the field of organic chemistry and pharmaceutics.
