Celebration events dedicated to 90th anniversary of NAS of Belarus to be held on November 15-16, 2018
On 15 – 16 November 2018, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will celebrate its 90th anniversary. Well-known scientists from the Union State and the CIS countries, leading foreign Academies of Sciences, world research organizations and centers are expected to arrive for the celebration. On the days of anniversary celebrations, the Third International Scientific and Practical Conference "Science – for the Innovative Development of Society" will be held. The conference program will include fundamental and applied issues of creating high technologies, materials and products in breakthrough areas of science development. Leading scientists of our country and foreign guests will present scientific reports on the development of physics, mathematics and computer science; current problems of physical materials science; modern energy systems, processes and technologies. There will be presented the latest developments in mechanical engineering, surface engineering, chemistry and the Earth sciences, modern biotechnologies and ecology, medical sciences, humanities, and agrarian sciences.
NASB scientists take part in conference on circular economy
On 9 November 2018, scientists of the NASB organizations participated in the conference "Circular Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development." The event was organized by the Belarusian Economic Research and Outreach Center BEROC to discuss prerequisites for the introduction of the circular economy in the Republic of Belarus, existing legislative aspects, problems with statistics in waste management, as well as proposals promoting the sustainable economic development of the country.
Nadezhda Batova, Head of the Sector of Ecological and Economic Problems of the NASB Institute of Economics, spoke on the forms of organization and best practices of the circular economy, in particular on the successful experience of implementing business projects as part of the circular economy projects.
Round table "Personality of Salomeya Rusetskaya through Space and Time" to be held at NASB Institute of History
On 13 November 2018, at 10:00 a.m., the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will hold a round table discussion “Personality of Salomeya Rusetskaya through Space and Time.”
2018 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Salomeya Rusetskaya, the first female doctor known in the history of Belarus. The celebration of this event has been inscribed on the List of UNESCO Memorable Dates Calendar for 2018.
National Press Center holds press conference on anniversary events of NAS of Belarus
On 6 November 2018, a press conference on preperation and holding of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was held at the National Press Center of the Republic of Belarus. Three NASB leaders addressed the media, namely Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the NASB Presidium; Nikolay Kazak, Director General of the State Scientific and Production Amalgamation “Optics, Optoelectronics and Laser Technology”, Director of the B.I. Stepanov Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus; and Andrei Ivanets, Chairman of the Young Scientists Council of the NAS of Belarus, Deputy Director for Research of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Belarus.
Vladimir Gusakov told the journalists about the foundation and development of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and also about some modern achievements of the NASB organizations, the staff of the Academy and its scientific potential.
Ancient canoe from Neman river is 500 years old
Last week, an ancient canoe was lifted from the bottom of the Neman River nearby the village of Nikolaevo (Ivye district, Grodno region). This work was done by joint expedition of the NASB Institute of History, the Marine Pegas diving center, and participants of the 4X4 jeep forum. Dendrochronological dating of the canoe was held at the NAS of Belarus. The research showed that the canoe was made approximately in 1500-1510.
Maxim Yermokhin, Candidate of Biology, Leading Researcher of the Laboratory of Productivity and Sustainability of Plant Communities of V.F. Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany, NAS of Belarus, led the research. It was established that the oak from which the ancient boat was made was about 300 years at the moment of its logging. Consequently, the tree began to grow at the very beginning of the 13th century.
Meeting with Iranian scientists held at NASB Institute of Philosophy
On 2 November 2018, a meeting with Iranian scientists was held at the Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Belarus. Dr. Mustava Hosseini, Rector of the University Esra Tehran, and Dr. Mehdi Mousavi, Lecturer at the State Shahid Beheshti University Tehran, presented reports on Iranian philosophy, told their Belarusian colleagues about the system of philosophical education in Iran and answered questions from the audience.
Leaders of the NASB Institute of Philosophy held negotiations with Iranian colleagues on further cooperation and implementation of joint research projects.
Winners of Prizes for Young Scientists on occasion of 90th anniversary of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus announced
On 31 October 2018, the results of the competition for Prizes for Young Scientists on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus were summed up at the extended meeting of the Bureau of the NASB Presidium.
This one-time only competition was held in seven nominations and aimed at supporting talented young scientists of the Academy of Sciences, whose scientific works were important for basic and applied science. It was timed to the 90th anniversary of the foundation of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The Prize is equal to 100 basic units.
NASB scientists invited to compete for Stars of Commonwealth Award for 2018
The CIS Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation announced a competition for the Stars of the Commonwealth Award for 2018.
The Stars of the Commonwealth Award was established by the CIS Humanitarian Cooperation Council and the CIS Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation. It is awarded annually in recognition of the outstanding contributions and achievements in such areas as humanities, culture, art, education, science, archiving, information and mass communication, sports, tourism, and work with young people. The achievements should contribute to the rapprochement of the peoples of the CIS countries and the development of each of the CIS countries and the Commonwealth as a whole. The award is equal to 2 million Russian rubles and is not bestowed twice.
NAS of Belarus launches 11th Belarusian Antarctic expedition
On 31 October 2018, the 11th Belarusian Antarctic expedition was launched at the extended session of the Bureau of the NASB Presidium attended by the heads of organizations. This year, eight participants will go to the ice continent. They will have to work hard to continue the construction of the Belarusian Antarctic station on the shores of the Antarctic continent.
Both specialists who have already visited the continent and newcomers will go on the expedition. Among them, there are six researchers from such NASB organizations as the Republican Center for Polar Research, the Institute of Physics, the Scientific and Practical Center for Bioresources, and two participants from the National Research Center for Ozonosphere Monitoring of the Belarusian State University. The expedition crew consists of Alexey Gaidashov, Head of the expedition; Dmitry Lukashanets, Leading Specialist, Deputy Head of the expedition; Sergey Baikov, Meteorological Engineer; Vladislav Bazylevich, Radiometric Engineer; Artur Ivashko, Master in Maintenance and Reliability Engineering; Sergey Sukharev, Surgeon; Alexey Khatkevich, Mechanical Engineer of Diesel Power Plants; and Alexander Lenkevich, Electrician for Repair and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment.
President of Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian visits National Academy of Sciences of Belarus
On 30 October 2018, a State Delegation of the Republic of Armenia headed by President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian visited the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The visit aimed at discussing promising areas of Belarus-Armenia scientific and technical cooperation. Today, President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian held talks with the leadership of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, got acquainted with the exposition of the Museum of the NASB History and the permanent NASB exhibition “Native Science Achievements to Production.” The Armenian delegation also visited B.I.Stepanov Institute of Physics of the NAS of Belarus.
NASB scientists participate in Forum of Belarus and Ukraine Regions
On 25-26 October 2018, Gomel hosted the 1st Forum of Belarus and Ukraine Regions. On the first Forum day, a meeting of the Belarusian-Ukrainian Business Cooperation Advisory Council and negotiations of representatives of Belarusian and Ukrainian companies were held.
At the exhibition venue of the Institute of Forest of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, a Scientific and Practical Conference on Perspective Directions and Mechanisms of Cooperation in Science and Technologies was held. The conference gathered about 120 experts. It discussed current scientific issues related to development of remote Earth sensing and space research, materials science, environmental management, new technologies for industrial production, etc.
NASB Council of Young Scientists to hold 15th International Scientific Conference “Youth in Science 2.0’18” on October 29 – November 1, 2018
On October 29 – November 1, 2018 the Council of Young Scientists of the NAS of Belarus will hold the 15th International Scientific Conference “Youth in Science 2.0’18”. This anniversary conference will be one of the largest youth scientific events among those being implemented in our country. In 2018, the forum is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the NAS of Belarus.
A solemn opening will be held on 29 October 2018 (Monday), at 2:00 p.m. The forum is going to present the largest international and interdisciplinary projects, the scientific developments being implemented with the participation of young scientists. The conference will be attended by over 300 scientists from more than 10 countries, including Belarus, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Lithuania and others. The leadership of the Councils of Young Scientists of the Academies of Sciences which are the IAAS members (IAAS – International Association of Academies of Sciences) will also participate in the conference.
Scientific works on World War I presented at NASB Institute of History
On 25 October 2018, new scientific works were presented at the International Scientific Conference “Belarus in Flames of the World War I (to centenary of the end of the World War I” at the NASB Institute of History. Among them, there was a six-volume book The First World War of 1914–1918. It has been prepared by Russian scientists with the participation of their Belarusian colleagues and is dedicated to the World War I. This multi-volume book has systematized all scientific knowledge on the topic.
The book Belarus in the First World War of 1914–1918 by Mikhail Smolyaninov, Leading Researcher of the NASB Institute of History, was also presented there. It details the fighting, mobilization, occupation regime, and the situation of the population during the war.
Director of NASB Institute of Philosophy takes part in International Scientific and Practical Conference "Metropolitan Iosif (Semashko; 1798–1868): Personality, Epoch, Historical Path of Orthodoxy in Belarus"
On 24 October 2018, a solemn opening of the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Metropolitan Iosif (Semashko; 1798–1868): Personality, Epoch, Historical Path of Orthodoxy in Belarus" was held at the conference hall of the National Library of Belarus. The scientific forum is dedicated to the 220th birth anniversary and the 150th death anniversary of Iosif (Semashko), Metropolitan of Lithuania and Vilnius.
The conference was organized by the Belarusian Orthodox Church, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Department of Humanities and Arts of the NAS of Belarus, the Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Belarus, and the Minsk Theological Academy.
Meeting of CIS Council for Cooperation in Basic Science held in Dushanbe
On 12 October 2018, a delegation of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus consisting of Sergei Ya. Kilin, Vice Chairman of the NASB Presidium, and Vladimir V. Podkopaev, Head of the Department for International Scientific and Technical Cooperation of the NAS of Belarus, participated in the sixth meeting of the CIS Council for Cooperation in Basic Science (CBS), which was organized at the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan.
Representatives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan, and the CIS Executive Committee also arrived to participate in Dushanbe meeting.

Conference on centenary of end of World War I to be held in Minsk and Smorgon
2018 On October 25, at 10:00 a.m., a plenary meeting of the International Scientific Conference “Belarus in Flames of the World War I (to centenary of the end of the World War I” will start its work at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The conference will be attended by the Head of a Representative Office of the Federal Agency for the CIS Affairs in the Republic of Belarus (Rossotrudnichestvo); a Counselor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Belarus; diplomatic representatives of the USA and German embassies accredited in the Republic of Belarus; Chief of the Presidium of the Public Chamber of the Union State of Belarus and Russia; Deputy Chairman of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on Legislation.
