In 2017, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Foundation for Support of Education and Science (Alferov’s Foundation) prizes competition for young scientists was held for the fourth time. According to the Regulations, one author or a group of authors (no more than three persons) can participate in the competition. The scientific evaluation of works is done by the Commission on Prizes of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
The National Academy of Sciences and the Foundation for Support of Education and Science (Alferov’s Foundation) Prize for young scientists in 2017 in the field of physics, mathematics, computer science, physical and technical and engineering sciences has been awarded to Alexander B. Mikhalychev, Senior Researcher of the B.I.Stepanov Institute of Physics of the NAS of Belarus, Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, for his work "New Methods of Quantum Computing". This work is a series of works related to one of the most rapidly developing areas of modern science - quantum computer science. The series of works includes 66 publications (17 articles in journals, 23 publications in collections and 26 abstracts), which present fundamental results, significantly expanding the potential of quantum methods of processing and transmitting information. These results were published in leading international top-ranking scientific journals and presented at well-known international forums. The results obtained by the young scientist have already been applied in a number of international projects implemented by the B.I.Stepanov Institute of Physics of the NAS of Belarus. Alexander B. Mikhalychev, Senior Researcher of the B.I.Stepanov Institute of Physics of the NAS of Belarus, Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, is the author of 74 scientific publications, including 20 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals (17 of them are in foreign journals), 25 articles in collections of papers, 29 conference abstracts. The results of his scientific work, published in the Scientific Reports magazine, are included in the "Top 10 Fundamental Results of Scientific Researches of the NASB Scientists in 2016".
The National Academy of Sciences and the Foundation for Support of Education and Science (Alferov’s Foundation) Prize for young scientists in 2017 in the field of biology, chemistry, medicine, agrarian sciences and earth sciences have been awarded to Evgeny A. Bondarenko, Junior Researcher of the Chemical Faculty of the Belarusian State University, for his work “Impact of a giant photocurrent quantum yield in electrochemical processes on nanostructured semiconductor films of bismuth oxisulfide”. In this work, using the bismuth oxisulfide film electrodes, the synthesis method of which was developed and implemented in this study for the first time, a unique phenomenon in photoelectrochemistry of semiconductors – the generation of a photocurrent with anomalously high quantum efficiency value reaching several thousand percent – has been discovered. Evgeny A. Bondarenko, Junior Researcher of the Chemical Faculty of the Belarusian State University, is the author of 12 scientific works (2 of them in foreign journals), 2 articles in proceedings, 8 conference abstracts.
The laureates will be presented with Diplomas on behalf of the founders on the eve of the Day of Belarusian Science. For each nomination the Prize in Belarusian rubles is equivalent to $2.5 thousand.
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Alferov’s Foundation Prize for scientific works and inventions, which are of great importance for fundamental and applied science, was established on 5 June 2014 to encourage young (up to 35 years old) Belarusian scientists. This initiative belongs to the Nobel Prize in Physics laureate, Vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, foreign member of the NAS of Belarus, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Zhores Alferov.
