On 15 February 2018, a delegation from the Turkish Research Council for Science and Technology (TUBITAK) headed by the President Prof. Akhmet Arif Ergin visited the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The Fifth meeting of the Joint Committee for Scientific and Technical Cooperation between TUBITAK and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus headed by Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the NASB Presidium, took place.
The meeting noted the parties' interest in further scientific and technical cooperation and support for the exchange of scientists within the framework of joint research projects.
The sides exchanged views on areas for further cooperation. In particular, within the framework of the cooperation agreement between the Council of Turkey for Scientific and Technical Research and the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research (BRFFR) signed on 2 May 2017.
As a result of the negotiations, the parties agreed to select and examine joint Belarusian-Turkish projects in the first quarter of 2018 as part of the TUBITAC-BRFFR project competition and to start financing the selected projects in the second quarter of 2018.
The plans include the creation of a joint Belarusian-Turkish laboratory in photonics and nanophotonics on the basis of the B. I. Stepanov Institute of Physics of the NAS of Belarus. In addition, specific steps will be taken to increase the participation of the Turkish-Belarusian organizations in the Horizon-2020 program (within the framework of the EU Contact Point (TUBITAK) and Thematic Contact Points "Horizon-2020" in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus).
All this is reflected in the final protocol, signed by Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov and Mr. Ergin. Besides, the Belarusian side proposed to organize an exhibition of developments of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in Turkey to develop priority research projects and form joint groups for their implementation.
The cooperation of the NAS of Belarus with the Republic of Turkey is carried out on the basis of the Agreement between the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Turkish Research Council for Science and Technology (TUBITAK) signed in 2002 and the Agreement on scientific cooperation between the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Turkish Academy of Sciences signed in 2009.
At present Belarusian and Turkish scientists carry out 3 scientific and technical projects in the field of materials science, physics, and machine building.
