Scientific Practical Workshop “Detection of GMOs in the Republic of Belarus” to be held on September 21, 2015
The event will be held as part of preparation of the Third National Report on fulfillment of the Cartagena Protocol on Biodiversity to the Convention on Biological Diversity in the Republic of Belarus. It is co-organized by the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the National Coordination Centre for Biosafety, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus with participation of the Belarusian Society of Geneticists and Breeders. The workshop will focus on the issues of fulfillment of the Agreement on Eurasian Economic Union in the field of accreditation, the system of biosafety in the Republic of Belarus, monitoring of food products containing GMOs, creation of glyphosate-resistant transgenic plant, etc.
V.F.Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany to host 2nd International Scientific Workshop “Wetlands Flora: Modern Problems of Classification, Mapping, Use and Protection”
On September 24-25, 2015 the NASB Institute of Experimental Botany in cooperation with the Belarusian Botany Society and the State Nature Protection Institution “Republican Landscape Reserve “Elnya” will hold the 2nd International Scientific Workshop “Wetlands Flora: Modern Problems of Classification, Mapping, Use and Protection”.
43 reports by 93 authors from 32 scientific, educational and nature protection organizations of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and Lithuania are to be presented at the workshop. The event will focus on the results of wetlands biodiversity research, topical issues of flora classification and mapping, wetlands monitoring and protection.
On September 11, 2015 Rezekne (Latvia) hosted inauguration of Days of Belarusian Culture dedicated to 525th anniversary of birth of Francisk Skaryna, Belarusian first printer
On September 11, 2015 the Days of Belarusian Culture dedicated to the 525th anniversary of birth of the Belarusian first printer Francisk Skaryna were opened in Latvia. The event was organized by the Union of Belarusians of Latvia headed by Valentsina Piskunova. The inauguration took place in Rezekne (Latvia). The Days of Belarusian Culture inauguration ceremony involved Mayor of Rezekne Alexaander Bartoshevich, General Consul of the Republic of Belarus in Daugavpils Vladimir Klimov, Chairman of the Union of Belarusians of Latvia Valentsina Piskunova, member of the Board, Union of Belarusians of Latvia, Chairman of the Belarusian Assiciation “Pramen” (Riga), Member of Advisory Committee for National Minorities, Ministry of Culture of Latvia Alena Lazareva, as well Chairman of R?zekne Belarusian Association “Suzorye” Lyudmila Stets. The inauguration ceremony also involved Vice-Director of the Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature and Alexander Lukashanets and Deputy Director of the National Library of Belarus Alexander Susha who brought a collection of books dedicated to the life and activities of the first Belarusian printer.
Participants of Belarusian Antarctic expeditions to meet with wide public at NAS of Belarus
On September 24, 2015 the representatives of the Republican Centre for Polar Research will meet with wide public and give a lecture “Antarctic: Following the Trail of Polar Expeditions”.
The attendees will learn about the importance of polar research for Belarus, get introduced to the history of the conquest of the South Pole and Belarusian scientists’ contribution to the world Antarctic research. The matters of international cooperation and construction of the Belarusian Antarctic station will be touched upon. The participants of the event will be able to see the beauty of the ice continent’s nature, depicted in photos and video materials as well as get insight into the daily life of Belarusian polar researchers. The lecture will also include a question answering section where everyone can learn first-hand information of interest.
Scientists of NAS of Belarus awarded with Supreme Eurasian Economic Council awards
On September 14, 2015 Head of NASB Office Academician Pyotr Vityaz and Director of the Institute of System Research in the Agroindustrial Complex Alexander Shpak were awarded with medals “For Contribution to Establishing the Eurasian Economic Union”. Academician Pyotr Vityaz received the honorary award for his considerable contribution to promotion of scientific-technical cooperation of the EAEU countries. Alexander Shpak was awarded for developing the fundamental concept regulations of creating the coordinated agroindustrial policies of the EAEU member states, aimed at establishing equal terms of mutual trade in the agroindustrial complex, increasing its sustainability and competitiveness at the domestic and foreign markets.
RAS President Fortov: We will cooperate in the entire range of areas
On September 15, 2015 President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Fortov visited the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. During his visit Vladimir Fortov participated in the inauguration of the 8th International Scientific Conference “Plasma Physics and Plasma Technologies” held at the NASB Institute of Physics on September 14-18, 2015 and made a report “Correlation and quantum effects in nonideal plasmas” at the plenary session.
Also Vladimir Fortov visited the NASB permanent exhibition “Achievements of national science applied in production” and the NASB History Museum.
Talking to the journalists, the Academician noted that Belarusian scientists had traditionally occupied the leading positions in plasma physics. “Mikhail Ilyashevich left a very strong school. And today this school is holding a conference on plasma physics at the Institute of Physics. As well as have the most widespread state of matter in nature, plasma has a very large scope of extensions: plasma medicine, sources of light, surface treatment, plasma electronics, semiconductors. The plasma-based sales in the world equal 3-4 billion dollars. The fact that the high level of academic plasma science has been maintained in Belarus is very important. That is why today scientists from all the over world have come to Minsk in order to exchange ideas, discuss the topic, learn about the activities of the institute, plan joint actions. I know that very soon a number of joint projects will be agreed on”, said Acad. Fortov.
RAS President Vladimir Fortov to make a report at plasma physics conference in Minsk
On September, 2015 President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Fortov will visit NAS of Belarus. As RAS President, it will be his first visit to the NAS of Belarus. The purpose of the visit is to participate in the 8th International Scientific Conference “Plasma Physics and Plasma Technologies”, make a report and hold negotiations with the leaders of the NAS of Belarus about the mechanisms and prospects of scientific-technical cooperation. RAS President will meet with Chairman of Presidium NASB Vladimir Gusakov and leading researchers of the NASB as well as attend the permanent exhibition “Achievements of national science applied for production” and the NASB History Museum.
The 8th International Conference “Plasma Physics and Plasma Technology” is organized by the NASB Institute of Physics. The conference is held in Minsk on September 14-18, 2015. The subject matter of the Conference covers all the basic aspects of plasma physics and its technological application in a variety of fields, including industry, medicine, biology, environmental protection problems etc. The conference will involve the leading scientists of Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, India and other countries.
On September 14-18, 2015 NAS of Belarus to host International Scientific Conference “Discrete Mathematics, Algebra and Their Application” (DIMA - 2015)
The International Scientific Conference “Discrete Mathematics, Algebra and Their Application” will take place at NAS of Belarus on September 14-18, 2015. The conference commemorates the 100th anniversary of Academician Dmitry Suprunenko’s birth.
The subject matter of the Conference covers the following fields: algebra and algebraic geometry: the structure of algebraic groups and ordinary algebra; permutation groups; linear groups and views, discrete mathematics and mathematical cybernetics: theory of graphs; combinatorial analysis and algebraic combinatorics; algorithms, data structures and computational complexity; application of discrete mathematics in computer science, operations research, algebra, topology, and the theory of probability.
The Conference is organized by NASB Institute of Mathematics and Belarusian State University. The event will involve speakers from Russia, Belarus, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland.
Academician Nikolai Krutko hosted at oldest Russian technical university
NASB Academician Nikolai Krutko has been hosted at the oldest Russian technical university. The program of the visit included introduction to the educational and laboratory centre of the university as well as discussion of the prospects of establishing a joint engineering centre.
Academician Nikolai Krutko, Director General of the Scientific and Production Association “Chemical products and technologies” brought to Saint Petersburg a draft strategic program of joint enterprise. He discussed the details of the document with Rector Vladimir Litvinenko. The head of the university noted that “in case there is an extensive, thoroughly elaborated plan for establishing and operating the engineering centre, it can be really competitive”.
First Belarusian-Chinese Humanities Forum held in Beijing on September 4
On September 4, 2015 Beijing hosted the first Belarusian-Chinese Humanities Forum. The Academy of Social Sciences gathered the leading experts of the two countries. In order to secure their intention to intensify the dialogue the parties signed an agreement for cooperation. The next Forum will take place in Minsk.
The focus of the Forum was the role of Belarus and China in World War II.
On September 8, 2015 lecture on modern methods of application of scanning probe microscopy given at NAS of Belarus
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus continues the tradition of organizing lectures of the leading scientists of the world research centres on topical issues of science. On September 8, 2015 the lecture “Modern methods of application of scanning probe microscopy” was given at the NAS of Belarus, which focused on the latest achievements in the mentioned field. The lecture was given by Prof. Sergei Magonov, President NT-MDT Development Inc. (USA), a well-known scientist in the field of scanning probe microscopy.
Prof. Sergei Magonov, a Belarusian, is a prominent expert in scanning probe microscopy for studying polymers and has been engaged in this area for more than 20 years.
Belarus Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov attends trade fair of Belarusian science achievements and meets with scientific community
On September 4, 2015 Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov held a meeting with the representatives of scientific community. Following the results of the meeting Andrei Kobyakov instructed the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus to accelerate the development of the bylaw for establishment of the BelBiograd park.
Before the meeting Andrei Kobyakov attended the trade fair showcasing the achievements of Belarusian science, including the stands of the NASB Scientific and Practical Centres for arable farming, potato, fruit and vegetable farming, for animal breeding. Moreover, the Belarusian Prime Minister instructed the NAS of Belarus to consider the issues related to Road M-1 illumination using Belarusian LED technologies as well as increased funding for science and research by means of budget expenses optimization.
Trade fair showcasing achievements of Belarusian academic science opens at NAS of Belarus
Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of Presidium, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, inaugurated the trade fair of the achievements of Belarusian academic science. At the inauguration Vladimir Gusakov noted that NAS of Belarus has the tasks to integrate into the economy, work for the economy and secure the innovation development and scientific-technical progress of the country. Tasks, which are being successfully accomplished. The fair showcases over 500 innovation and scientific developments. The fair will last till September 4.
Strengthening relations with China
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has signed Directive No. 5 “Concerning the development of bilateral relations between the Republic of Belarus and the People's Republic of China” dated August 31, 2015. The document was published on the National Legal Internet Portal of the Republic of Belarus, informs BelTA.
According to the document, “the basis of the Belarusian-Chinese cooperation is mutual resolute support on the issues regarding the vital interests of the two countries such as sovereignty, territorial integrity, security and economic development.”
Institute of History hosts Republican Panel “Belarus-UN: together for 70 years”
On account of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Organization, one of the founding countries of which is Belarus, on August 27, 2015 the Centre of Geopolitics History of the NASB Institute of History, the History Department of Belarusian State Pedagogy University named after Maxim Tank in cooperation with the National Archive of the Republic of Belarus organized the Republican Panel “Belarus-UN: together for 70 years”.
The event involved the Academician-Secretary of NASB Department of the Humanities and Arts, Head of the Centre of Geopolitics History of the NASB Institute of History, Corresponding Member Alexander A. Kovalenya, experts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, UN Mission in Belarus, researcher of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, international relations experts the leading Belarusian universities as well as representatives of a range of Belarusian state agencies engaged in implementing projects in the major areas of activities of the UN and its institutions.
VNIIEM Corporation and NAS of Belarus sign Agreement for creating Earth remote sensing craft
VNIIEM Corporation and NAS of Belarus have signed an Agreement for development and further operation of a high resolution Earth remote sensing craft called BKA-2.
The document was signed by Director General, VNIIEM Corporation Leonid Makridenko and Head of NASB Directorate Pyotr Vityaz.
Earlier Russia and Belarus had established a joint Russian and Belarusian infrastructure for controlling Belarusian (BKA) and Russian (KANOPUS-V) spacecraft as well as a system for receiving and processing the data sent by them.
UAE Space Agency delegation visits NAS of Belarus
On August 24, 2015 Chairman of NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov met with the delegation of the United Arab Emirates Space Agency. The delegation arrived in Belarus to hold negotiations with the NASB leaders about the mechanisms and prospects of promotion of scientific cooperation in the field of space technologies.
As Vladimir Gusakov stressed during the meeting, Belarus is interested in collaborating with the UAE in the space sector.
Director General, UAE Space Agency also noted that in the longer term the United Arab Emirates view Belarus as a partner for research of Mars.
The delegates from the UAE visited the State Enterprise “Geoinformation Systems” of NAS of Belarus as well as JSC “Peleng”.

NAS of Belarus Foreign Member Zhores Alferov: “The country has preserved and develops science”
On August 24, 2015 Zhores Alferov, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Saint-Petersburg Research Centre of the RAS, Foreign Member of NASB, Nobel Prize Laureate met with the teachers and students of Vitebsk State Technological University. Deputy Chairman of NASB Presidium Sergei Kilin also participated in the event.
As Zhores Alferov stressed during the meeting: “Belarus is the only post-Soviet state, which has fully preserved the achievements of the Soviet Union in the social sphere. And the main thing is that the country has preserved and develops industry, agriculture and science”. Zhores Alferov also said that he was glad that due to the state policies the Academy of Sciences had been preserved, which is the core of Belarusian science and which needs to be developed.
