8th Belarusian Antarctic expedition starts at NAS of Belarus
On October 29, 2015 at the extended session of the NASB Presidium Bureau, involving directors of the NASB organizations, the 8th Belarusian Antarctic expedition was started. This team will be comprised of five men, for all of whom, expect the team leader, it is the first expedition.
As Chairman of NASB Presidium said at the meeting, “The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus pays great attention to Antarctic research. Not only is research funded, but also building our own infrastructure in the Antarctic”. Vladimir Gusakov added that on October 20, 2015 the first unit of the Belarusian Antarctic station was presented. On behalf of all the scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov wished the expedition members strong health, success in their work and optimism.
School of Young Researchers inaugurated at NAS of Belarus
On October 29, 2015 the School of Young Researchers was inaugurated at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The event involved students of Minsk secondary schools who were welcomed by the members of the Council of Young Scientists of NAS of Belarus, representatives of Minsk Palace of Children and Youth, NASB Researchers Training Institute.
The School of Young Scientists is a project of the above mentioned institutions aimed at encouraging school students to be involved in science and research.
During the inauguration ceremony NASB Chief Scientific Secretary Alexander Kilchevsky expressed hope and confidence that the school students who gathered at NAS of Belarus that day had taken their first significant step into science, which would continue at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, because, according to Alexander Kilchevsky, it is precisely “youth who makes science”. Chief Scientific Secretary assured that NAS of Belarus would always be glad to assist the young generation at all stages of their educational and research activities.
8th International scientific conference “Regulation of growth, development and productivity of plants” starts at V.F.Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany
The conference “Regulation of growth, development and productivity of plants” has been held for the eighth time (since 1999). This year the conference has gathered scientists from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, China, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan.
As Academician Nikolai Laman, Chair of the Science Committee of the 8th international scientific conference, said at the opening ceremony, “Plant physiology is a science, which has existed for more than 200 years. It has accumulated considerable experimental data on the physical and chemical organization of plants, self-regulation of functional systems, the adaptation of the plant organism to various stresses, becoming the theoretical basis of modern agriculture”. Due in no small part to these achievements “today we are involved in a great food revolution in the world with the rates of food production being higher than the rates of population growth”.
NASB Institute of Philosophy takes part in UN 70th anniversary celebrations
The NASB Institute of Philosophy, the Brest State University named after A.S.Pushkin, the Department of Public Information of the UN Office in Belarus a national workshop “The UN’s 70th anniversary and the ways of further strengthening friendship and cooperation between nations”.
The event was held on October 26-27, 2015 in Brest. The participants of the workshop discussed the milestones of the United Nations Organization history, its civilizational mission, collaboration with the BSSR and the Republic of Belarus.
Humanities scholars hold a press conference under the theme “Updating research in the field of the humanities”
On October 27, 2015 the press conference under the theme “Updating research in the field of the humanities” was held at press room of the House of Press.
The event involved Alexander Kovalenya, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Humanities and Arts, NASB Corresponding Member; Alexander Lokotko, Director of the NASB Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research, NASB Academician; Alexander Lukashanets, the Centre’s Vice Director for Science, Director of the branch “Institute of Language and Literature named after Yakub Kolas and Yanka Kupala”, NASB Corresponding Member; Vyacheslav Danilovich, Director of the NASB Institute of History, and Anatoly Lazarevich, Director of NASB Institute of Philosophy.
The participants of the conference presented information on the system of clusters (centres) in the advanced areas of science to be set up at the facilities of the research institutions. Seven clusters are to be established within the Department of Humanities and Arts. At the Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research the International Centre for Belarusian Culture, the International School of Belarusian Language and Literature and the Republican Laboratory of Historical and Cultural Heritage will be established. The Institute of History will open International School for Historical and Archeological Research, the Institute of Sociology will launch the Republican Research Centre for Sociological Monitoring. The Republican Centre for Fundamental and Practical Philosophy will open at the Institute of Philosophy and the Leading Republican Economic School will open at the Institute of Economics.
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko expresses condolences on death of NASB Academician Nikolai Borisevch
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has expressed condolences to the relatives, friends and colleagues of Hero of Socialist Labor, Merited Scientist of the Republic of Belarus, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Nikolai Borisevich in connection with his death.
“All his life is an example of labor merit, devotion to science and his homeland - Belarus. The name of Nikolai Borisevich is closely associated with prominent national achievements in the field of spectroscopy and luminescence, infrared technologies, laser physics, which received high international recognition. His hard work for the benefit of his homeland was celebrated with honorable awards of the Republic of Belarus”, says the condolences message.
Academician Nikolai A. Borisevich dies
Belarusian science has suffered a great loss. On October 25, 2015 at the age of 92 died Nikolai Alexandrovich Borisevich, an outstanding scientist in the field of molecular spectroscopy, luminescence, laser physics and infrared technology, Doctor of Physical-Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Russian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of several foreign academies, a prominent state and public figure, manager of Soviet and Belarusian science, veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of Socialist Labor.
Nikolai Alexandrovich Borisevich was born on September 23, 1923 in Luchnoy Most Village, Berezino District, Minsk Region in a rural family. From 1941 to 1944 he was a member of the underground Komsomol group and a soldier at partisan unit 152, since 1944 he was an artillerist in the Red Army who reached Berlin. For the courage he displayed during the war Nikolai Borisevich was awarded with two Orders of the Red Star, Orders of the Patriotic War, 1st and 2nd class and several medals.
Nikolai Borisevich graduated from Belarusian State University in 1950. He was President of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR for 18 years from 1969 to 1987. His name is associated with the rapid development in the BSSR of physics, mathematics, informatics, chemistry, Earth sciences, photobiology and other sciences. He initiated establishment of design bureaus, experimental and industrial manufactures, regional research centers, development of defense-related works at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Under his management the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR became one of the best academies of the Soviet Union, BSSR scientists occupied the leading positions in the world in a range of major scientific areas.
The contribution of Nikolai Borisevich to development of optics, spectroscopy and their applications is invaluable. He is the author of more than 600 publications. For his outstanding scientific achievements Nikolai Borisevich was awarded with the Lenin Award, State Prizes of the USSR and the Republic of Belarus. He supervised more than 30 PhDs, 12 of the scientists he supervised are Professors, among them there are 3 Academicians and 1 Corresponding Member.
The contribution of Nikolai Borisevich to development of science has been celebrated with honorable state awards. He was awarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, Order of the October Revolution, three Orders of Lenin, Order of Friendship (Russian Federation), Order of Francysk Skaryna. He was given the title of Hero of Socialist Labor and awarded with the Order of Lenin and the Sickle and Hammer golden medal in accordance with the Decree of the Presidium, Supreme Council of the USSR of December 27, 1978.
Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology delegation visiting NAS of Belarus
The delegation of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology headed by President Chau Van Minh is visiting Belarus on October 24-29, 2015. The main goal of the visit is discussing the joint projects implementation and negotiating priority areas of cooperation for 2016-2018.
On October 26, 2015 the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology delegates held negotiations with the leaders of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology Chau Van Minh noted that the parties were particularly interested in collaborating in the following areas: materials science, ecology, laser technologies.
During its stay in Belarus the delegation is also to visit several research institutions of NAS of Belarus.
V.F.Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany to hold 8th International scientific conference “Regulation of growth, development and productivity of plants”
On October 28-30, 2015 the NASB V.F.Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany in cooperation with the Belarusian Public Association of Plant Physiologists will conduct the 8th international scientific conference “Regulation of growth, development and productivity”.
The main topics of the conference are growth, development and productivity of plants, phytocenoses and artificial agroecosystems; photosynthesis, respiration, mineral nutrition and water metabolism of plants, signaling systems of higher plants cells; stress and adaptation in plants, enhancing their stability with the use of physiologically active substances and biotechnological methods.
NAS of Belarus hosting a meeting of representatives of CIS member states executive agencies on cooperation in the space sector
On October 22-23, 2015 the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is hosting a meeting of representatives of the CIS member states executive agencies on cooperation in the space sector. The event involves the representatives of the CIS Executive Committee, delegations from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine and Azerbaijan. The meeting included the welcoming speeches by Deputy Head of Belarus President Administration Igor Buzovsky, Chairman of NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov, the heads of the delegations.
NAS of Belarus organizations taking part in 20th international specialized expo “Power. Ecology. Energy Saving. Electro”
At the 20th international specialized expo “Energy. Ecology. Energy saving. Electro”, which will be held in Minsk on October 13-16, 2015 the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will present over 80 innovative developments. All in all, 18 organizations of the NAS of Belarus are participating in the expo.
NAS of Belarus to host Belarus-China Science and Technology Forum 2015
On October 13, 2015 the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will host the Belarus-China Science and Technology Forum 2015. The event will be held within the framework of the China Technology and Innovation Products Expo and a special away Harbin expo displaying China’s science and technology achievements in Minsk. The forum will focus on the advanced areas and mechanisms of promotion of Belarusian-Chinese scientific-technical cooperation.
The forum will involve a large delegation of scientists and experts from the People’s Republic of China (around 80 delegates). On the Belarusian side representatives of government agencies related to science and technology, research organizations, companies, universities, innovation infrastructure entities are expected to participate in the event. Altogether the Forum will involve around 500 experts.
2nd International Scientific Conference “21st Century Genetics and Biotechnology: Problems, Achievements, Prospects” to be inaugurated on October 13, 2015
On October 13, 2015 the inauguration of the 2nd International Scientific Conference “The 21st Century Genetics and Biotechnology: Problems, Achievements, Prospects ” (dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the NASB Institute of Genetics and Cytology) will take place. The conference will involve well-known scientists and specialists from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Moldova, Turkey, Poland.
The 2nd International Scientific Conference “21st Century Genetics and Biotechnology: Problems, Achievements, Prospects ” will present the results of modern genetic and biotechnology research conducted by the institute’s scientists and their colleagues from other institutions. In the course of the conference the prospects of further international cooperation in the field of genetics and biotechnology will be discussed.
3rd International Scientific and Practical Conference “Problems of Biodiversity Conservation and Bioresources Use” opens at NAS of Belarus
On October 7, 2015 the 3rd International Scientific and Practical Conference “Problems of Biodiversity Conservation and Bioresources Use” dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Academician N.V.Smolsky opened at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Over 400 participants from 14 countries had applied for entry to the conference.
During the conference inauguration the NASB Chief Scientific Secretary Alexander Kilchevsky mentioned N.V.Smolsky’s huge contribution to the botanical garden development, saying that N.V.Smolsky contributed considerably as a prominent scientist and manager to strengthening the material base and developing the Central Botanical Garden, prepared an entire school of scientists – over 20 PhDs”. Speaking on the conference subject Alexander Kilchevsky stressed that “Belarus is actively involved in the processes of biodiversity conservation. At the facilities of the Institute of Genetics we have established a DNA bank, which contains over 1700 specimens, this creates attractive opportunities for cooperation within the Academy’s Department of Biological Sciences as well as between biologists in Belarus as a whole”.
NAS of Belarus delegates participate in Belarusian Science Days at Expo Milano 2015
The NAS of Belarus delegates have taken active part in the Scientific and Practical Forum “Advanced Areas of Scientific Research in the Republic of Belarus for Ensuring Food Safety and Improving Quality of Life”, which was held within the framework of Belarusian Science Days at Expo Milano 2015 (Milan, Italy). The reports and presentations showcased the NASB scientists’ major achievements related to the subject of the expo. At the business matchmaking session held simultaneously with the Forum information on 50 scientific and technical developments of the NASB organizations was presented. In the course of their visit the NASB delegates visited the San Raffaele Park and the Microbiology Centre of Italy.
First Belarus-Pakistan Scientific Workshop opens at NAS of Belarus
On October 6, 2015 the First Belarus-Pakistan Scientific Workshop opened at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. A large group of scientists representing the research organizations of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has arrived in Minsk upon the invitation of the NASB leaders to participate in the event. The scientists of the two counties are expected to discuss the promising directions of cooperation as well as explore the areas of accomplishing joint projects in the field of information technologies, physical engineering sciences, chemistry and Earth sciences, biological and medical sciences.
Within the framework of the visit the Pakistani visitors attended the permanent exhibition “Achievements of national sciences applied in production”. Also the following institutions of the NAS of Belarus are to be visited during the visit: the United Institute of Informatics Problems, the Physical-Technical Institute, the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, the Institute of Physiology.
NAS of Belarus takes part in International Technical Fair
From September 28 to October 3, 2015 Plovdiv, Bulgaria, hosted the 71st International Technical Fair, in which the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus participated within the Republic of Belarus National Display. The NAS of Belarus was represented by the Physical-Technical Institute, NPO Center, the Institute of New Materials Chemistry, the Center of LED and Optoelectronic Technologies.
The International Technical Fair is one of the most prestigious business forums dealing with innovative technologies in South-East Europe. The NASB institutes displayed their technologies, among which were automated systems for plasma and water jet cutting, centrifugal test equipment, laboratory centrifuges, LED lights for different purposes, a new composite magnetic material and products based on it, electronic ceramics and products based on it, fluorescent dyes, polymeric materials for 3D-printers, 3D-glasses, technologies and equipment for magnetic and pulse pressing, forming parts of orthopedic implants.
