The Department of Physical-Engineering Sciences develops and coordinates the fundamental, search and applied scientific investigations in the field of power energetics, energy- and resource saving, materials and high-energy technologies, machine-building, modeling and diagnostics.
With the purpose of development of scientifically reasonable strategy of development of power energetics (including nuclear), effective and economically justified realization of the power program in the Republic, the fundamental research on study of processes a heat and mass transfer in capillary-porous bodies and disperse systems, creation high-intense and ecologically clean energy saving technologies, developing the methodology and equipment of precision automated diagnostics of thermal processes in power units and machines are carried out.
Powerful potential and scientific-technological developments receiving a world recognition are available in branches of material science (superhard, polymer and metal-polymer composite materials, materials for electronics) and high-energy technologies based on laser, plasma, electron beam and explosive influence. The appropriate investigations are directed to perfection of tool manufacture, maintenance of a level of development of the enterprises of electronic industry and their production, creation and wide development of laser technologies in mechanical engineering for thermal hardening, cutting and welding (especially at processing the superhard materials, ceramics, glass, stone in microelectronics, lithography and medicine).
The research works in the field of machine-building, modeling and diagnostics are oriented to increasing a technological level and competitiveness of automobiles, tractors and machine tools produced in Belarus, creation of methods of multivariant designing with application of modern computer facilities, computer models and graphic means, accelerated methods of tests, simulating conditions of operation, There are also developed the on-board information and control-diagnostic systems for mobile machines produced in the Republic, increase of their safety and ecologicity; creation and realization of new constructional materials and technologies of weldings, the hardening, modern foundry technologies and means of operative diagnostics, ensuring reduction of weight of machines, economy of materials and increase of term of their service are sharp.
The Department of Physical-Engineering Sciences unites the Scientific and Practical Materials Research Center, 10 scientific institutes and centers, whose personnel includes about 2160 researchers, technicians and attendants. There are 1265 researchers, 103 Doctors of Sciences (Prof.) and 325 Candidates of Sciences (Ph.D.) among them.
