Assessmentof the performance of seals of hydraulic cylinders based on the results of comparative workbench tests. pp. 357--362

Summary: Combination seals developed by the V. A. Belyi Institute of Mechanics of Metal-Polymer Systems and BelAZ Production Group have been subjected to comparative workbench tests. The results show high wear and abrasion resistance of the new fluoroplastic composite "Ftoran-5" which served to make the seals and wipers featuring the performance comparable with that of the seals produced by the Busak + Shamban Co., a leading global manufacturer of seals,

Study of the band-block brake. pp. 363--372

Summary: An experimental band-block brake is described in which pressure of blocks distributes evenly over the pulley rim. Methods of comprehensive studies of such brakes at various loads and sliding speeds are summarized. The accomplished experiments have revealed the pattern of distribution of pressure over the rims, the temperature of the friction surface, the causes of appearance of heat spots and cracks on the friction surface of the brake pulley, as a function of the braking conditions. It has also been studied how the parameters of friction surfaces of braking couples change. Interpolation of the numerical data obtained during the experiments has yielded a functional relation between the actual pressure and the stabilized temperature on the friction surface of band-block brakes.

Method of developing polymer-oligomer polytetrafluorethylene-based triboengineering materials. pp. 373--381

Summary: Structural features, mechanophysical and triboengineering characteristics of polytetrafluorethylene-based composite materials have been studied after modification with fillers having different compositions and dispersion. It has been revealed that a polymer-oligomer composition as a filler improves the wear resistance without impairing the mechanophysical characteristics. The effect is due to the appearance of a surface transfer film consisting of an oligomer matrix and dispersed particles of polytetrafluorethylene and antifriction fillers.

Research in the domain of friction cotnact mechanicsla nd physics at the Tver State Engineering University. pp. 382--392

Summary: Results of research in the domain of friction contact physics and mechanics of solids and dispersed materials are reported by the Tver State Engineering University. The research has been under way in the domains of computer modeling of friction contact characteristics, friction interactions between dispersed hard surface materials, magnetic triboengineering, contact interactions in switching devices, contacting during elastoplastic deformation.

Stress-strain state of the matrix around the diamond grain exposed to the normal and tangent loading components. Part 2. Analysis. pp. 393--396

Summary: The results of numerical implementation of the dependencies of displacements of the diamond grain, its angle of rotation, the component of the tensor of stresses in the matrix of the cutting wheel in operation on the variations of the radial and tangent loading components and elastic characteristics of the matrix. Also calculation of relative deformation in the radial and peripheral directions and shear deformation show how they depend on the same parameters that govern the components of the tensor of stresses.

Tribochemical active and tribostable polymer and polymeric systems. pp. 397--410

Summary: Recent and summarized results of studies of friction of tribochemically active polymers are disclosed using model mechanochemical reactions in polyimides, phenol formaldehyde polymers, polyphenylenoxalins, and polyacryinitril. It is shown that sulphate compounds of molybdenum may form during friction of polyacrylnitril filled with MoS2. Mass transfer in surface layers of tribostable polymers (superhighmolecular polyethylene, polyarylenesterketones) and molecular mass distribution have been studied to determine the effect on tribological characteristics. The tribological characteristics of carbon fibers have been studied to reveal their contribution into the friction of carbon plastics. The causes of instability of tribochemically active polymers in friction, changes in the chemical and physical structures of the polymers under the effect of friction, have been investigated.

Methods of creating lubricating materials with nanomodiflers. pp. 411--424

Summary: Methods are analyzed how to create lubricating materials containing nanodispersed particles of various compositions and structures. It is shown that nanomodifiers produce a combined effect on the mechanics and kinetics of mechanical and corrosive wear of tribosystems by altering the parameters of contact microroughness, producing stable separating layers with a higher load carrying capacity and delivering active functional components into the friction contact zone. Trends of developing lubricating materials with nanomodifiers for friction units of machines and mechanisms are discussed.

Contemporary requirements for monitoring oil service fitness in diesel internal combustion engines. pp. 425--436

Summary: Basic requirements of performance of modem internal combustion engines are formulated. Basic principles of rating the fitness of oils in effect until present are described. It is shown that tougher standards of exhaust of diesel engines have caused stronger contamination of oils with carbon black particles significantly affecting the performance of oils in the engine on the whole. New requirements are advanced for monitoring the fitness of oils. Therefore, laboratory techniques, portable devices and devices built into oil circulation lines for monitoring carbon black concentration are evaluated. It is shown that development of new built-in devices for monitoring carbon black concentration is a challenging task of promoting the reliability of diesel engines.

Contact fatigue damage of wheels and rails. pp. 437--447

Summary: Types and mechanisms of contact fatigue damage of wheels and rails are analyzed. The classification is based on the hypothesis that residual tensile stresses due to contact deformation are the criterion of origination of a contact fatigue crack.

Surface processes during cutting of steels with coolant lubricants containing complexes of metals. pp. 448--454

Summary: The problem is discussed of using coolant lubricants (based on aqueous solutions of Versene complexes of metals, e.g., Cu, Cr, Mo) in the processes of cutting of steels, specifically finishing. When these fluids attend cutting, the components on the exposed steel surface react with the solutions of metallic complexes producing a copper coating on the workpiece surface. The coating may serve as a substrate layer for performing another process, such as electrolytic chrome plating, for protection against corrosion or as an ornamental layer, it also prevents carbonization during quenching.

Thermophysical behavior of lubricating materials during transition into the state of boundary layers. pp. 455--459

Summary: It is shown experimentally how the coupled solid surface influences the thermophysical characteristics of liquid lubricating materials in the state of the boundary layer. The role of surfactants in the oil and the surface activity in the extent of changes in heat conductivity and heat capacity of lubricating materials under the above conditions is evaluated.

Determination of resistance to free rolling. Part 1. Method of measurement. pp. 460--466

Summary: An experimental method has been developed based on the pneumatic submersion of a specimen in order to study the process of friction of solid during free rolling. The design of the instrument is described; tentative tests of ball-sphere configurations are shown. The method reveals the kinetics of resistance to rolling during transition from rest to motion.
