Exchange acidity in coniferous forest soil in Belarus. pp. 9--14

Summary: The paper deals with investigations pursued over the Belarus area, in particular in pine and spruce forest growing under different soil and ground conditions. The results obtained show the spatial and temporal changes of soil exchange acidity. The forests growing under moisture deficiency conditions are characterized by low soil acidity and those growing under excess moisture --by high soil acidity. The forests with the most productive woody tier occupy an intermediate place as to the exchange acidity value. Soils in pine and spruce forests have the same exchange acidity under similar air-water conditions.

The effect of general and specific crossability of parental forms on hybridization efficiency of potato dihaploids. pp. 37--40

Summary: It has been proposed to use the index of general crossability (GC) as a measure of genotype ability to give the definite hybridization results in crosses with some forms and specific crossability (SC) as an index representing the deviation of hybridization results of two genotypes from those expected according to their GC. The analysis of general and specific crossability of the fertile potato dihaploids has shown that the hybridization results (number of berries, seed set in berry and seed set per a pollinated flower) in general were determined by parental GCs (in approximately equal proportion by maternal -- and pollinator GCs). Mean square deviation of SC (the effect of preference) was insufficient. GCs of pollinators were closely correlated with their indices of functional male fertility determined by in vitro pollen sowing.

Peculiarities of self-fertile rye plant performance at inbreeding and crossbreeding. pp. 41--43

Summary: Self-compatibility does not reduce productivity. With self-fertility rise grain weight and its contribution to performance increase as against plumpness. Self-pollination mainly takes place in high-self-fertile forms and at crossbreeding. These patterns can be attributed to balance formation at the gamete level due to emergence of compensatory gene complex.

Two-stage gel electrophoresis of chloroplast pigment-protein complexes with application of digitonin, triton X-100 and sodium dodecyl sulfate. pp. 56--60

Summary: The aim of this work is to characterize structural elements evolved from inner chloroplast membranes by the previously developed method of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of chloroplasts treated with digitonin. These elements were exposed to sodium dodecyl sulfate (0.25%) and triton X-100 (0.75%) treatment and were separated into well-known pigment-protein complexesusing gel electrophoresis. Gel electrophoresis of chloroplasts treated with 1% digitonin was shown to evolve the particles of the photosystem I with its light-harvesting complexes, those of the photosystem II with its light-harvesting components, a portion of the pool of the chloroplast light-harvesting complexes unbound to the photosystems, as well as associates of the photosystems I and II with their light-harvesting complexes. The associates of the two photosystems are assumed to exist in chloroplasts at least after unstacking of thylakoids.

Change in pentosephosphate pathway indices in patients with tuberculosis under long-term exposure to low-dose radiation. pp. 75--78

Summary: Direct dependence of thiamin metabolism on 137Cs blood content in patients with tuberculosis was demonstrated. Profound inhibition of nonoxidative reactions of the pentosephosphate cycle was observed in the body of the patients with increasing the dose of incorporated 137Cs from 0.6 to 0.9 nCi/kg. Concentration of thiamin diphosphate decreased by 47% whereas transketolase activity was reduced by 30% in the blood of those patients. The thiamin diphosphate effect was found in 91% of the patients examined.

Binding of prostaglandin E2 with specific receptors in modification of plasmatic membranes of liver with malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxynonenalem. pp. 79--83

Summary: We investigated effect of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) on prostaglandin (PG) E2 receptor parameters and physical state of liver plasma membranes. The modification of the membranes by MDA diminished PGE2 binding, decreasing receptor affinity for PGE2 and receptor density whereas HNE increased PGE2 binding, enhanced receptor density but did not changed receptor affinity. ESR study showed the decrease in the whole membrane fluidity after modification by MDA whereas HNE lowered membrane fluidity in the internal zone of lipid bilayer and increased it in the surface area. The possible effects of membrane changes caused by MDA and HNE on PGE2 receptor parameters are discussed.

Indices for cell immunity in healthy children and adolescents in Belarus. 84--89

Summary: Two-color immunophenotyping of lymphocyte subsets using a lysed whole blood method was performed in 46 healthy children and adolescents aged 6 to 16 years living in Minsk city and region. The study of lymphocyte subset distribution showed normal distribution of CD3+ cells (T-lymphocytes), CD4+ cells (T-helpeis), CD8+ cells (T-cytotoxic/suppressors), CD8+CD57+ cells (high differentiated T-killers), HLA-DR+T cells (activated), CD25+T cells (with IL-2 receptor), CD19+CD5+ cells (maturing B-lymphocytes), and CD19+CD23+ cells (B-lymphocytes with IgE receptor). However, the distribution of CD19+ cells (B-lymphocytes), CD3-CD16+CD56+ cells (NK), CD3+CD56+ cells (T-killers not restricted by HLA antigens), and CD4+CD45RA+ cells (T-suppressors/inducers) was asymmetric. Analysis of age-related changes in different lymphocyte subsets revealed progressive declines with age in the percentages and absolute numbers of total lymphocytes, T cells, CD4+, CD8+T cells, and CD8+CD57+T-killers together with an increase in NK. The expression of the activation markers- HLA-DR and CD25 on T cells also tended to increase. The percentage of CD4+ cells bearing CD45RA decreased with age. The proportion of B cells that coexpress CD5 tended to decrease while expression of CD23 tended to increase. The percentages and absolute numbers of lymphocyte subsets in healthy children and adolescents obtained in the study may serve as a reference range for estimating the immune status of pediatric patients provided the methodology and equipment are similar.

Behaviour of rook (Corvus frugilegus) and hooded crow (Corvus corone cornix) during wintering in the Central Belarus depending on climatic and food factors. pp. 104--109

Summary: Winter time budgets of rook and hooded crow were studied in Minsk in 1994 -- 1996. Differences in behaviour of these species with initially different migration status were found. Roosting and some activities of rook have linear dependence on the temperature of the studied interval, from 4 to -13°C. Availability of stable food source mainly in scrap-heaps is the necessary condition of rook survival during wintering period. Hooded crow activities have non-linear dependence on the temperature. The increase in flight activity of hooded crow in the temperature interval from 0 to -10°C is probably associated with use of heat production of this activity for thermoregulation. This species is less dependent on food of anthropogenous origin during the wintering period.

The influence of wild ungulates on soil invertebrates in groves of Belovezhskaya Pushcha. pp. 110--117

Summary: Wild ungulates exert a substantial effect on soil invertebrates communities. Changes in soil mesofauna complexes are expressed as a reduction in density of most groups, disturbance of the domination structure and the distribution pattern of invertebrates. Concurrent with the adverse effect upon the populations of many groups and species of invertebrates, a considerable restructuring has been observed in soil mesofauna communities related with increasing in number of several large saprophage species and indicative of an adaptive character of changes in pedobiont complexes.
