Antioxidant activity of peroxidase system in supramolecular structures of cellular nuclei in postambryonal phase of wheat ontogenesis. pp. 25--29
Summary: Determination of overall antioxidant activity of peroxidase system in supramolecular structures of cellular nuclei was carried out in correlation with physiological phases of wheat seedlings from dormant air-dry germs (0 h), their germination (24 h) until coleoptile growth (48 h ® 96 h) and outbreak of the first leaf from the coleoptile (120 h). A weak overall antioxidant activity was shown in the air-dry germs. Each developing organ displays specificity of redox reactions in peroxidase system and the maximum activity is exhibited in nucleoplasm of internode during formation of plant stem-root carcass.

Expression and heritability of functional pollen fertility in interspecific diploid potato hybrids. pp. 34--38
Summary: Functional pollen fertility (FPF) was studied in 330 complex potato hybrids including germplasm of S. tuberosum and some other diploid Solanum species. Hybrids were obtained from 30 crossing combinations between 10 female and 4 male diploid potato clones (test crosses). FPF was estimated by the frequency of germinated nonsterile pollen grains (FPF in vitro). It was found that about 52% of all studied hybrids had the low level of FPF in vitro (less than 5%). Heritability of FPF in vitro estimated by interclass correlation was 10.3% The method used for the FPF estimation showed that about 80% of all hybrids had the FPF level less than 10%. This means that low FPF of complex diploid potato hybrids comprising S. tuberosum germplasm can arouse problems for crossing experiments in diploid potato breeding. More precise evaluation of FPF using in vitro methods needs optimisation of test systems for pollen germination.

Composition of porphyrins in pigment mutants Scenedesmus obliquus. pp. 43--45
Summary: The accumulation of chlorophyll a and b and its porphyrin precursors such as protoporphyrin IX (PP), Mg-protoporphyrin IX (monomethyl ester) [MP(E)] in cells of pigment mutants Scenedesmus obliquus in the dark was demonstrated. The amounts of PP and MP(E) in the photosensitive mutant PGC-910 in darkness and in light were higher in comparison with the porphyrin amounts in the greening mutant PGC-912 at the same conditions. The photodynamic effect induced by PP and MP(E) in cells of the photosensitive mutant under illumination is discussed.

Changes in properties of erythrocyte membranes induced by coronary disease. pp. 46--48
Summary: Changes in concanavalin A-induced agglutination and activity parameters of membrane-bound acetylcholinesterase of erythrocytes from coronary disease patients as correlated with case severity were investigated. Aggravation of pathology was found to raise in blood percentage of cells with altered physical-chemical properties of surface components (glycoproteins, acetylcholinesterase). These results suggest that structural-functional modification of surface components in erythrocyte membranes reflects pathological shifts occuring in complicated cases.

Melanin pigments in some basidiomycetes. pp. 49--53
Summary: Ability of basidiomycetes Phellinus igniarius and Inonotus sp. to synthesize considerable amounts of melanin pigments has been established. The stimulants of melaninogenesis (tyrosine, pyrocathechole, etc.) have been revealed. Physical and chemical characteristics of the pigments showed that black-brown pigments synthesized by the macromycetes are true melanins.

Polygalacturonase production by Aspergillus carbonarius cells with walls impaired by lytic enzymes. pp. 54--56
Summary: Protein secretion and production of extracellular enzyme -- polygalacturonase -- after structural modification of A. carbonarius cell wall was examined. Partial degradation of A. carbonarius cell wall polymers by lytic enzymes was shown to result in 5-fold protein secretion, yet PG activity in incubation medium was not revealed. Electrophoretic separation of extracellular proteins secreted by A. carbonarius allowed to identify protein corresponding in electrophoretic mobility to A. carbonarius polygalacturonase but not displaying enzyme activity. Enzyme protein has been assumed to undergo structural modifications during secretion through A. carbonarius cell wall.

Effect of incubation temperature and aeration of the media on lipid peroxidation processes in yeast. pp. 57--59
Summary: Effects of fermentation temperature and aeration of the media on lipid peroxidation processes (LP) were studied using intact cells of pigmented (Rhodotorula glutinis) and non-pigmented (Lipomyces starkeyi) yeasts. Oxidation was found to proceed more rapidly in non-pigmented cells. Carotinoid pigments were identified as major factors inhibiting initial peroxide formation.

Thyroidal and calcium-regulating function of thyroid and parathyroid glands after gamma-irradiation. pp. 60--63
Summary: Irradiation by 1Gy dose decreased level of thyroid hormones, increased calcitonin content and altered calcium metabolism. Effect of radiation on thyroid and calcium-regulating metabolisms is realized, probably, by means of central control mechanisms in hypothalamus--hypophysis--thyroid gland system.

A new approach to modelling spatial structure of conformationally flexible peptides based on nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy data. pp.73--77
Summary: A new method has been proposed to compute spatial structure of the conformationally flexible peptides based on the nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) spectroscopy data. This approach includes two main stages: i) the initial approximations for peptide (conformations of indidividual amino acid residues which agree with the experimental NOE data) are calculated by specially developed methodology, ii) the computation of the spatial molecular structure is carried out using theoretical conformational analysis. The method has been tested by modelling spatial structure of peptide rp342 presumably containing immunodominant epitope of the HIV-1 protein gp120.
