Boris Evgenievich Paton (b. 27.11.1918, Kiev, Ukraine - 19.08.2020) - a scientist in the field of electric welding, special electrometallurgy and materials science. Foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1995). Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1958; Corresponding Member since 1951), USSR Academy of Sciences (1962; Corresponding Member since 1958), Russian Academy of Sciences (1991), Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering (1986), Bulgarian (1969) and Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1973), Academy of Sciences of the GDR (1980), Kazakhstan (1995), Georgia (1996), Tajikistan (2001), Azerbaijan (2002), Doctor of Engineering Sciences (1952), Professor (1953). Honorary Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (1994), Indian National Academy of Sciences (1994). Honorary Doctor of a number of universities. Twice Hero of Socialist Labor (1969, 1978). Hero of Ukraine (1998). Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1968). Honorary Citizen of Kiev (1982).

Scientific works in the field of metallurgy, technology and metal welding. He developed the theory and created technologies of fundamentally new welding methods, including: electroslag welding of thick-walled products, submerged-arc welding, pulse-arc welding in shielding gases, electron-beam welding and flash welding. He developed unparalleled high-performance equipment for welding pipes of main pipelines, theoretically substantiated and mastered the production of multilayer high-pressure pipes. He created a special electrometallurgy for refining and improving the properties of steels and specialized alloys. He is the founder of a new direction of science - space technology and space production. He developed theoretical and practical problems of space welding, including the creation of equipment and the conduct of unique technological experiments on welding, cutting, soldering and coating in space, the construction of large space structures.

Editor-in-Chief of the journals “Bulletin of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”, “Automatic Welding”, “Cosmic Science and Technology”, “Science and Innovation”, “Modern Electrometallurgy”, “Technical Diagnostics and Non-Destructive Testing”.

Author of more than 2000 scientific papers, including 20 monographs, more than 720 inventions.

State Prize of the USSR (1950) for the development of theoretical and practical foundations of space welding. Lenin Prize (1957) for the development of electropowder welding technology. State Prize of Ukraine (2004) for electric welding of soft living tissue. International Prize named after N.N. Bogolyubova (2006–2008) for outstanding contributions to science and the development of international cooperation. Global Energy International Prize (2010, Russia) for the contribution to the solution of scientific and technological problems of pipeline transportation of energy carriers and mechanical engineering.
