The Department of Medical Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was established in 2003 by transforming the Department of Biomedical Sciences, established in 1995 due to the need to develop basic research in the field of medicine in the republic, integrating the scientific and technical potential to solve the most important scientific and practical health problems.

The Department has the following main activities:

  • study of the mechanisms of functioning of body systems in normal and pathological conditions;
  • development of new methods for the diagnosis of non-communicable diseases, diagnostic devices;
  • experimental substantiation of new principles and methods of treatment of nervous, mental, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and other diseases;
  • regularities of the pathological process;
  • development of new medical, diagnostic, prophylactic and rehabilitation technologies, medical equipment and medical products, medicinal and immunobiological preparations, cellular and molecular biological technologies;
  • creation of new technologies for the prevention of diseases based on the use of dietary supplements, other drugs;
  • environmental monitoring and forecasting;
  • rehabilitation of radioactively contaminated land;
  • mechanisms of adaptation of the human body to the action of environmental factors;
  • protective measures to overcome the remote radioecological and biomedical consequences of the Chernobyl disaster;
  • functioning of biosystems, biotechnology, chemotherapy and immunoprophylaxis and therapy of infectious and noncommunicable diseases, immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry;
  • study of the effects of chemical, physical and biological environmental factors;
  • toxicological and hygienic assessment of new chemicals, compositions and formulations introduced into the national economy and health care.

The Department includes state scientific institutions “Institute of Radiobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus” and “Institute of Physiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus”, as well as Republican Research Unitary Enterprises “Institute of Biochemistry of Biologically Active Compounds of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus” and “Institute of Radiology”.

More than 300 people work in them, including 12 doctors of science and 57 candidates of science. The Department of Medical Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus consists of 8 academicians and 16 corresponding members.
