The activities of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB or NAS of Belarus) are carried out on the basis of combination of one-man management and collegiality of examination and resolution of issues by the Academy of Sciences governing bodies with the personal responsibility of their members for implementation of decisions taken and the state of affairs in their areas of work. The General Meeting of the NAS of Belarus, the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and the Bureau of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus are the NASB governing bodies.

The General Meeting of the NAS of Belarus is the supreme collegiate governing body of the Academy of Sciences. It includes the following members: Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus; members of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus; Academicians and Corresponding Members; heads of scientific organizations subordinate to the NAS of Belarus; representatives of scientific organizations subordinate to the NAS of Belarus, who are elected by scientific (scientific and technical) councils of these organizations by secret ballot for a term of 5 years with the right of withdrawal and replacement; as well as representatives of scientific organizations of ministries, other republican authorities and institutions providing higher education (up to 20% of the General Meeting), who are elected by secret ballot by scientific (scientific and technical) councils of their organizations for a period of 5 years with the right of withdrawal and replacement.

The session of the General Meeting of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus
(April 27, 2017)

Sessions of the General Meeting are convened by the NASB Presidium twice a year. At the sessions, the issues of science development, scientific and technological progress, priority directions of fundamental and applied scientific research and developments in the Republic of Belarus are examined; the concepts and long-term forecasts of science development are approved; decisions are made on the organization and coordination of fundamental and applied research and developments; members of the NAS of Belarus are elected under the established procedure; Regulations of the NAS of Belarus are adopted; decisions on organization, reorganization and abolishment of scientific departments and regional branches of the NAS of Belarus are taken within the competence of the General Meeting; annual reports on the Academy’s activities, as well as the Regulations of the General Meeting of the NAS of Belarus and provisions on election of members of the NAS of Belarus are approved; the Statute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, as well as changes and supplements to it are adopted to be further submitted in the prescribed manner for approval by the President of the Republic of Belarus.

Resolutions of the General Meeting of the NAS of Belarus are mandatory for the Presidium and the Bureau of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, scientific organizations and other legal entities subordinate to the NAS of Belarus, and by all subjects of scientific activities in the Republic of Belarus in issues of organization and coordination of fundamental and applied scientific research and developments.
