SHANKO Yuri Georgievich

Yuri Georgievich Shanko (b. 26.09.1959, v. Khodoki, Ivatsevichi district, Brest region) - a scientist in the field of surgery. Corresponding Member (2017), Doctor of Medical Sciences (2006), Professor (2009). Excellence in Healthcare of the Republic of Belarus (2001).

Scientific research in the field of neurosurgery of the skull base, neuro-oncology, acute focal brain lesions. He developed the principles of diagnosis and surgery of lumbar stenosis, radical surgery of craniofacial tumors, new approaches to the surgical treatment of malignant gliomas of the brain (local chemotherapy with cisplatel, interstitial radiation therapy). He proposed modified approaches to the base of the skull and formulated the principles of management of the early postoperative period in neurosurgical patients. Developed technologies for endoscopic transsphenoidal and transcranial neurosurgery of pituitary and skull base tumors; for the first time in the CIS, he performed endoscopic operations to remove meninges of the skull base of various localization, precursor nerve neurinomas, liquor fistula plastics, etc. For the first time introduced into clinical practice perineural delivery of mesenchymal stem cells to the brain during heart attack and intracranial hemorrhage.

Author of about 500 scientific papers, including 9 books, 20 patents.

Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (2008) for the cycle of scientific works “Development of new principles and microneurosurgical technologies for treating skull base tumors”.

Awarded with a medal.
