Valery Nikolaevich Gurin (30.01.1938, Vitebsk – 01.09.2007), a scientist in the field of human and animal physiology. Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1994; corresponding member since 1986), foreign member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (2001), Doctor of Medical Sciences (1974), Professor (1975). Honored Scientist of the Republic of Belarus (1998).
Scientific works on the problems of thermoregulation and systemic regulation of metabolic processes. He developed the concept of the integrative role of cholinergic neurons in the brain, develops the idea of disinhibition as the principle of operation of the nerve centers. The role of the autonomic nervous system and the neurotransmitter systems of the brain in the regulation of lipid metabolism during stress has been studied. Studies of the role of brain proteases in the regulation of heat exchange processes and mechanisms of interaction between thermoregulation and immunity systems have been carried out, new principles and methods have been developed for distinguishing antagonistic substances among neurotropic drugs and new ways of inducing hyperthermia. Under his leadership, studies are being conducted aimed at studying the possibility of correcting changes caused in the body by the action of factors of industrial ecosystems, using immunomodulators and regulatory peptides.
Author of more than 350 scientific papers, incl. 6 monographs.
State Prize of the Republic of Belarus in 1996 for the cycle of works "Mechanisms of thermoregulation in health and pathology".
