International scientific conference The Russian Language in The Modern Bilingual Space held

On April 27, 2023, the NAS of Belarus hosted the international scientific conference The Russian Language in The Modern Bilingual Space. The Forum is timed to coincide with The Year of the Russian Language as The Language of International Communication, which is announced in 2023 in the CIS countries.

Academic Secretary of the Department of Humanities and Arts of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Alexander Kovalenya, Director of the Center for the Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Researches of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Alexander Lokotko, Director of the Institute of Linguistics of the Center for the Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Researches Igor Kopylov, Deputy Secretary General of the CIS Dauren Abayev and other distinguished guests made welcoming speeches.

Russian is an independent Slavic language of the East Slavic subgroup. It is one of the world's highly developed standard languages, performing the functions of intra-national, international and interethnic communication. Being the state language of the Russian Federation, it is one of the 2 state languages of the Republic of Belarus.

At the forum, participants discussed the peculiarities of the functioning of the Russian language in the context of bilingualism, its role and place in a bilingual society. The researchers analyzed the place and role of the Russian language in the educational process of the Republic of Belarus. The issues of interrelationships of closely related Russian and Belarusian languages at the present stage of their functioning were considered. Scientists have identified the most acute problems of state bilingualism in our country and outlined the prospects for further study of the two constitutionally enshrined state languages.

The conference included an exhibition of works prepared by the staff of the Department of Belarusian-Russian Language Relations of the Yakub Kolas Institute of Linguistics over the years of its existence. These are author's and collective monographs, dictionaries, reference books, collections of scientific articles, the object of multi-aspect research of which is the Russian and Belarusian languages.

The conference was attended by researchers from Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other CIS countries.
