Press conference held on the topic Achievements and Prospects for the Development of Science in the Field of Biotechnology in the Republic of Belarus

On June 1, 2023, a press conference on the topic was held at the National Press Center of the Republic of Belarus: Achievements and Prospects for the Development of Science in the Field of Biotechnology in the Republic of Belarus. The press event was attended by: Emilia Kolomiets, Director General of the State Scientific and Production Association Chemical Synthesis and Biotechnology, Academician of the NAS of Belarus; Alexander Shepshelev, Director of the Institute of Microbiology of the NAS of Belarus; Andrey Goncharov, Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the NAS of Belarus; Gordey Gusakov, Director of the Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry of the NAS of Belarus. The participants of the press conference told about the main directions of biotechnology development in the country and in the organizations of the Academy of Sciences, the latest achievements of scientists.

According to Emilia Kolomiets, Director General of the State Scientific and Production Association Chemical Synthesis and Biotechnology, last year the production of biotechnological products in the country increased by 60 percent compared to 2021. According to Emilia Kolomiets, the coronavirus epidemic gave a big surge in pharmacy. Many scientific institutions began to develop means to combat it. There are great advances in industry as well.

Director of the Institute of Microbiology of the NAS of Belarus Alexander Shepshelev told reporters that a conference on biotechnology will be held at the Academy of Sciences. "Undoubtedly, biotechnologies are the future. Belarusian scientists have very close contacts in this field with scientists from other countries. In particular, in order to exchange views, the latest achievements and developments in the field of biotechnology, the XIII International Scientific Conference Microbial Biotechnologies: Fundamental and Applied Aspects will be held on June 6–9 on the basis of the National Academy of Sciences," Alexander Shepshelev said.

The Virology Center at the National Academy of Sciences will open in the near future, it will solve the tasks of developing vaccines against topical diseases in the shortest possible time. This was announced at a press conference by the Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the NAS of Belarus Andrey Goncharov. "The work of the center will primarily focus on the development of diagnostic methods, treatment and the creation of a variety of vaccines. An interdisciplinary research team will work on this. Specialists in virology, immunology, biotechnology and biochemistry will work at the center. All this makes it possible to develop vaccines," Andrei Goncharov said.

In turn, Director of the Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry of the NAS of Belarus Gordey Gusakov said that scientists plan to develop a line of biologically active additives. "The institute has plans to create a whole line of biologically active additives. We are currently actively working with the Akadempharm enterprise. Various parameters of our substances are being worked out so that they can be defined as biologically active additives. Maybe they will be in dry form, or maybe in liquid form," Gordey Gusakov said.
