Official meeting of the 15th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition’s participants takes place

On June 19, 2023, an official meeting of the 15th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition’s participants took place in the NAS of Belarus.

The Academy of Sciences brought together participants of the 15th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, belarusian antarctic expeditions of different years; employees of organizations of the Departments of the NAS of Belarus involved in Antarctic topics; heads of scientific organizations of the NAS of Belarus, young scientists.

As Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov noted during the official meeting of polar explorers, the participants of the 15th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition worked clearly, harmoniously and effectively. "We are glad that you are all healthy and have successfully fulfilled your obligations. This year, the time spent in Antarctica was increased – you were there for more than 7 months and fulfilled all the tasks, programs and arrived with good results. The expedition worked clearly, harmoniously and effectively," Vladimir Gusakov addressed the expedition participants. It is very important for Belarus to stay and gain a foothold on this continent, the Chairman of the Presidium noted. "Economic activity is prohibited there, but tourism is only getting stronger. Therefore, it is important to show the world community that Belarus has its own station in Antarctica, which we are expanding and developing. I think that as a result of the 15th expedition, we need to prepare materials for the Head of State and show the results," the Head of the NAS added.

Welcoming remarks were made by: Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus Alexander Kilchevsky, Academician Vladimir Loginov, Director of the Institute for Environmental Management of the NAS of Belarus Sergey Lysenko, Head of the Republican Centre for Polar Research Vladimir Ryzhikov. The Head of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition Alexey Gaidashov shared the results of the expedition, told about the peculiarities of work during this field season. At the end of the ceremony, the expedition members were awarded Certificates of Honor of the NAS of Belarus and souvenirs.

A photo exhibition was also shown in the lobby of the first floor dedicated to the first Belarusian intercontinental expedition to a previously unexplored area of the Antarctic mainland.
