Round table dedicated to the National Unity Day 2023 held

On September 15, 2023, a round table dedicated to the National Unity Day was held in the NAS of Belarus.

The event was attended by members of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, academic secretaries, leading scientists of the Academy of Sciences, historians, sociologists, art historians, young scientists. During the Round Table, the scientists raised the topics of the importance of the Belarusian people’s reunification in the history of the Belarusian statehood, the further socio-economic, social and cultural development of the Belarusian people. The forum examined the national historical and philosophical context of the ideas of society consolidation, highlighted the results of recent sociological research by scientists, which analyzed the attitude of residents of modern Belarus to the values that unite us, as well as the themes of national unity in Belarusian cinema, the role of songwriting in patriotic education.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov stressed that National Unity Day is an act of restoring historical justice. "September 17, 1939 is one of the key dates in the Belarusian history. Assessing the events of those fateful days, we can say with confidence that the main force that ensured the reunification of the people of Western Belarus and the BSSR is the desire of the people from the depths of centuries to live with dignity in a single state." The Chairman of the Presidium stressed that "numerous published and archival sources indicate that the absolute majority of the Belarusian population of both Western and Eastern Belarus met the Soviet troops with great patriotic enthusiasm, supporting the reunification of the Belarusian people. The absolute majority of residents of Western Belarus welcomed the soldiers of the Red Army as their deliverers from Polish oppression." Speaking about the significance of the National Unity Day in the current history of the country and about the tasks that scientists of the Academy of Sciences face today, Vladimir Gusakov stressed that in the modern environment, humanities scientists should actively continue to work on restoring historical truth as an integral part of state policy in the field of preserving the historical memory of the Belarusian people and educating the younger generations.
