Forum Russia and Belarus: Common History, Common Destiny held

On October 3–4, 2023, the forum Russia and Belarus: Common History, Common Destiny was held at the site of the NAS of Belarus, dedicated to preserving the historical memory of Russia and Belarus, countering the falsification of the joint history of the two countries, the reviewing the results of the Second World War, including the rehabilitation of Nazi criminals and their accomplices, by strengthening humanitarian ties and developing cooperation. The forum was attended by representatives of the Standing Committee of the Union State, authorities and public administration of Belarus and Russia, institutions of higher education, academia and the expert community, representatives of the museums, archives, public associations, mass media of the two countries. The event was organized by the Center for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, the Historical Memory Foundation and the Institute of History of the NAS of Belarus.

Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS Vladimir Gusakov, Deputy State Secretary of the Union State Elena Bogdan, Deputy Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Anastasia Zyryanova, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans’ Affairs Elena Tsunaeva and other speakers delivered welcoming speeches at the plenary session. As Vladimir Gusakov stressed on the sidelines of the forum, Belarus and Russia need to defend the historical truth and resist the distortion of the events of the past. He stressed that in modern geopolitical conditions, scientists of the two countries need to more actively defend the achievements of national historiography. "This will allow us to resist the imposition of distorted and alien ideas about our past. Only by joint efforts it is possible to preserve the national state heritage, to educate the younger generation of patriotic qualities and civic position," the Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus said.

An agreement on cooperation between the Institute of Russian History of the RAS and the Institute of History of the NAS of Belarus was signed at the plenary session. The document was signed by Vadim Lakiza, Director of the Institute of History of the NAS, and Yuri Petrov, Director of the Institute of Russian History of the RAS.

On October 3, 2023, within the framework of the work of three specialized sections, the problems of key areas of Russian-Belarusian cooperation in the field of preserving historical memory and countering the falsification of history, of formation of spiritual and moral values in the process of educating a new generation, topical issues of historical education, historical and legal assessments and approaches in the study and coverage of the Nazi genocide in Belarus and Russia were discussed.

On October 4, 2023, the work of the forum was continued at the round table The Union State of Russia and Belarus: History and Modernity. Also, within the framework of the forum, presentations of the book Have no Statute of Limitations… Crimes of Fascism against the Peoples of the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 from series Library of the Union State, of books and collections of documents published by Russian and Belarusian historians and archivists. The forum participants visited the Khatyn Memorial Complex. As a result of the forum, a final resolution was adopted.
