Ten centuries of Minsk history are discussed at conference of NASB Institute of History

On 7-8 September 2017, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Minsk City Executive Committee, Department of Humanitarian Sciences and Arts of the NAS of Belarus and the Institute of History of the NAS of Belarus carry out an International scientific conference “Minsk and its Citizens: ten centuries of history (to the 950th anniversary of the city)”.

The opening and plenary session of the conference took place on 7 September at the Minsk City Hall. Sections will continue their work on 7 and 8 September at the Institute of History of the NAS of Belarus and the Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library of the NAS of Belarus.

The conference aims to be an important event in celebration of 950th anniversary of Minsk. The conference involves the participation of well-known experts in the history of Minsk: historians, archeologists, ethnographers, linguists, art historians, journalists, public figures from Belarus, Russia, Poland, Ukraine and Germany. The section of young researchers of the history of the city is planned to be held.

The results of the latest research on regional history and historical urban studies will be presented and discussed at the conference. The prospects of further research will be defined as well. The problem field of the conference:

  • social structure and the economy;
  • spiritual and material culture;
  • Minsk in the wake of wars and revolutions;
  • famous Minsk citizens;
  • sources on the history of the city;
  • tourist potential of the Belarusian capital.

    The conference will form the necessary scientific and theoretical foundation as a basis for knowledge of the history of the city and information about famous citizens. The conference will allow creating a basis for popularization and practical use of achievements of historical science, will make available to the society the latest knowledge on the history of native land, will facilitate their implementation in educational process, development of regional and international tourism.
