Press conference on World War I as turning point in fate of Europe

2018 The press conference “The World War I as a Turning Point in the Fate of Europe and Reconstruction of Forgotten Moments of History”, dedicated to the International Scientific Conference “Belarus in Flames of the World War I” (October 25-26, 2018), was held at the National Press Center of the Republic of Belarus. The following participants took part in the event: Vadim Lakiza, Deputy Director for Science of the NASB Institute of History; Sergei Tretiak, Head of the Department of Modern History of Belarus of the NASB Institute of History; Mikhail Smolyaninov, Senior Researcher of the Department of Military History of Belarus of the NASB Institute of History; Anatoly Sharkov, Researcher of the Belarusian Cultural Center for Spiritual Renewal; and Irina Chikalova, Leading Researcher of the Department of Historiography and Methods of Historical Research of the NASB Institute of History.

Among the topics discussed, there were the problems of studying the events of 1914-1918 that took place on Belarusian lands, the fates of Belarusian soldiers and military formations from our country.

Media were informed about the issues scheduled to consider at the conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the World War I, namely:

  • Domestic and foreign historiography and sources on the history of the World War I;
  • Political, social and economic situation on the eve and at the beginning of the World War I. Mobilization and evacuation measures. The refugee problem and its solution;
  • Fighting in Belarus (1915–1918);
  • Political, social and economic processes in Belarus in 1914–1918;
  • Civilians in war;
  • Results and consequences of the war for the Belarusian lands;
  • Memorialization of the World War I.
