Department Head at V. A. Belyi Metal Polymer Research Institute Vladimir Sergienko awarded Honorary Diploma of Council of Ministers
According to the Decree № 594 of 8 August 2017 the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus has decided to award Vladimir Sergienko, head of frictional materials science department at the V. A. Belyi Metal Polymer Research Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Honorary Diploma of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus for many years of fruitful scientific activity and considerable personal contribution to the development and introduction of import substitution technologies, materials and products in machine-building and metallurgical sectors.
New joint venture ACADEM-SERT Ltd established
On 11 August 2017, the limited liability company ACADEM-SERT for carry out research, testing and certification of vehicles was established and registered in Minsk through previous agreements between authorized representatives of the state scientific institution "The Joint Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus" and VEO Standards Technical Co., Ltd. (People's Republic of China).
Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of NASB Presidium, holds meeting with cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy
On 11 August 2017, Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the NASB Presidium, met with the cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The focus of the negotiations was the preparations for the 31st International Congress of Association of Space Flights Participants which will be held in Belarus in September 2018. The sides also discussed participation of Russian cosmonauts in this forum.
As emphasized by Vladimir Gusakov, "We attach particular importance to the holding this Congress in Belarus, which will be attended by representatives of dozens of countries. This event will play an important role in strengthening the image of Belarus as a space power. In this regard, your guidance and advice on organization, plan to carry out, and participants’ visit program are of great importance. "
Agrarian scientists hold press conference dedicated to issues of new agribusiness technologies and contribution of Belarusian scientists in development of agriculture
On August 10, 2017 a press conference dedicated to issues of new agribusiness technologies and contribution of Belarusian scientists in development of agriculture was held at the National Press-Centre of the Republic of Belarus. The event was attended by First Deputy General Director for Science of the Scientific and Practical Center on Animal Husbandry of the NAS of Belarus, the NASB Academician Ivan P. Shejko; Deputy General Director of the Scientific and Practical Center for Arable Farming of the NAS of Belarus Dmitry V. Luzhinsky and Deputy General Director for Science of the Scientific and Practical Center for Foodstuffs Aleksandr A. Shepshelev. Representatives of the scientific and practical centers spoke about the latest scientific developments in agribusiness technologies and answered numerous questions of journalists.
National Academy of Sciences of Belarus becomes IAAS reference organization
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will now perform the functions of the reference organization in charge of organizational and methodological support for the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS). The decision was taken on August 9, 2017 at the meeting of the NASB Presidium. In accordance with the decision, Chairman of the NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov was appointed new IAAS president, and the responsibilities of the reference organization were transferred to the NASB.
The participation of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in the work of the IAAS as a reference organization will enhance role of Belarus in the world and will help to establish new mutually beneficial contacts in the sciences.
Agreements between NASB Researchers Training Institute and three Sudanese leading universities signed
On August 9, 2017 a representative delegation of the Republic of Sudan visited the Researchers Training Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Negotiations on cooperation between higher education institutions of Sudan and the Researchers Training Institute of the NAS of Belarus were held. After the talks, the Rector of Researchers Training Institute of the NAS of Belarus Ihar I. Hancharonak and rectors of three leading universities in Sudan (Bahri, Al Neelain, Kassala) signed agreements on cooperation in the sphere of development of higher education, research training and academic mobility of teaching staff and students.
Republic of Sudan Delegation visits National Academy of Sciences of Belarus
On August 7, 2017 talks between the leadership of the NAS of Belarus and the delegation of the Republic of Sudan led by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Somaya Mohamed Ahmed Abo Kashwa took place at the NAS of Belarus. As Vladimir Gusakov noted during the meeting the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus attaches special importance to the development of mutually beneficial cooperation with Sudan. "You have considerable scientific and educational potential. Belarus and Sudan have many common scientific interests and the organizations of the Academy of Sciences work in the areas that are of interest to the Sudanese side. We are ready to support in this matter," the Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus noted. In turn, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Sudan, Dr. Somaya Mohamed Ahmed Abo Kashwa, stressed that today Sudan is especially interested in Belarusian innovative technologies in water purification, mining and minerals processing, genetics of agricultural animals and plants, medicine, medicine production.
NASB Researchers Training Institute and Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences sign agreement on cooperation
Head of the Researchers Training Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Head of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (GSCASS) signed an Agreement on Cooperation. During the meeting, Vice Chairman of the NASB Presidium Aleksandr Sukalo told Chinese partners about the scientific potential of the Academy’s organizations.
Igor Gancherenok, Rector of the NASB Researchers Training Institute, noted that the parties had held a number of meetings and negotiations, within the framework of which they discussed possible ways of developing researchers training programs for Belarus and China.
Prof. Huang Xiaoyong, GSCASS President, expressed hope for continued cooperation and invited Belarusian specialists to participate in the work of the school for young scientists in China. The leadership of GSCASS also expressed interest in expanding cooperation in the field of energy, in particular, with the NASB Institute of Energy. This area of cooperation may include lectures for specialists of the two countries, joint projects within the framework of fundamental research funds, etc.
Extended meeting of NASB Presidium Bureau held
On 27 July 2017, an extended meeting of the Bureau of the NASB Presidium was held. It aimed to discuss implementation of the indicators of the social and economic development forecast for the last 6 months by the NASB organizations. Foreign economic activity for this period was also characterized.
Nadezhda Stepanova, Head of Planning and Finance Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, made a keynote report concerning implementation of the indicators of the social and economic development forecast. On the whole, it was noted that in the first half of the year, the organizations of the Academy of Sciences had reached a positive balance in the foreign trade in goods and services. Attention was drawn to the optimal use of all possible sources of funding for scientific research.
Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of NASB Presidium, meets with Minister of Forestry and Water Resources of Turkey
Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the NASB Presidium, met with Veysel Eroğlu, Minister of Forestry and Water Resources of Turkey, Co-chairman of the Belarusian-Turkish Joint Intergovernmental Economic Commission, and with representatives of the Ministry.
Veysel Eroğlu showed interest in the development of the Academy’s pharmacologists in the field of medicines and dietary supplements, and the cultivation of natural raw materials for their production. He was also interested in the Belarusian experience in the field of energy, forestry technology, protection of forest lands, and water and air purification.
Vladimir Gusakov suggested to formulate directions for further cooperation between the parties in the near future.
Meeting with representatives of Roscosmos State Corporation held at NAS of Belarus
At the meeting of the NASB leadership and representatives of Roscosmos State Corporation, held on 27 July 2017, the results of the five years of Belarusian spacecraft in-orbit operation were summed up, and details of creation of a new Russian-Belarusian spacecraft were discussed.
According to Petr Vityaz, Head of the NASB apparatus, the cost of a new satellite is forecast to be about $ 180 million. Technical parameters of the satellite have already been agreed upon. The platform is under development now. Petr Vityaz considers this innovative project to be able to expand the scope of space information applications. The satellite launch is planned for 2020-2021. The technical characteristics of the satellite will be improved in comparison with the current Belarusian spacecraft. This will significantly expand the range of tasks to be solved.
Meeting of NASB leadership and representatives of Roscosmos State Corporation to be held on July 27, 2017
On 27 July 2017 (Thursday), a meeting of the NASB leadership and representatives of the Roscosmos State Corporation will be held in the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus (praspiekt Niezaliežnasci 66). The meeting will be dedicated to the five years of successful in-orbit operation of the Belarusian spacecraft.
The meeting aims at discussing issues of scientific and technical cooperation on space research in the field of peaceful space exploration, creation and tasks of a new Russian-Belarusian spacecraft for remote Earth sensing of high-resolution.
NAS of Belarus and Korea Institute of Science and Technology sign Memorandum of Understanding
On 24 July 2017, Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the NASB Presidium, and Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, President of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the NAS of Belarus and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). Before signing the Memorandum, the sides exchanged information on the scientific institutions represented and discussed the areas of further cooperation and joint research. In particular, they discussed the prospects of creating a joint laboratory or a scientific center, and the scientific cadres exchange. The Parties agreed to make a list of promising research projects and topics of mutual interest in the near future.
Working meeting of Interdepartmental Commission of Republic of Belarus on Antarctic Issues held at NAS of Belarus
On 19 July 2017, a working meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission of the Republic of Belarus on Antarctic Issues was held at the NAS of Belarus. As its outcome, a decision was made to strengthen the scientific part of the tenth expedition and to fill its activities with relevant scientific projects.
Before the beginning of the working meeting, Aleksei Gaidashov, Head of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, said that Belarus plans to receive the status of an advisory party in the international Antarctic Treaty. The status gives the right to vote and to participate in the development and adoption of decisions concerning the present and future of Antarctica.
Lecture on somatic mutations in human cells to be given by Professor Alexej Abyzov (USA) in NASB United Institute of Informatics Problems
On 19 July, at 2:30 p.m., a lecture devoted to definition and analysis of somatic mutations in human cells will be given by Professor Alexej Abyzov (Mayo Clinic, USA) in the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the NAS of Belarus (Minsk, vul. Surhanava, 6, room 206).
The presence of genomic changes in individual cells of the human body, that is, somatic mutations, has been known for a long time. But only a few years ago, due to development of a number of biotechnologies, their study acquired mass and systematic character.
Extended working meeting of Interdepartmental Commission of Republic of Belarus on Antarctic Issues to be held at NAS of Belarus
On 20 July 2017, an extended working meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission of the Republic of Belarus on Antarctic Issues will be held at the NAS of Belarus.
The meeting is to review the implementation of the Activities Plan on performing the Agreement on Cooperation in the Antarctic between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Russian Federation in 2016-2017, to discuss plans for scientific and logistical cooperation for 2017-2018, including those within the framework of the 10th Belarussian and the 63rd Russian Antarctic Expeditions.
Head of NASB apparatus Petr A. Vityaz conferred title of Honorary Citizen of Berezovsky District
According to the decision of the Berezovsky District Council of Deputies, Petr Aleksandrovich Vityaz, Head of the NASB apparatus, Academician, Doctor of Technical Sciences, scientist in the area of new materials, technologies and engineering development, Honoured Scientist of the BSSR, has been conferred the title of Honorary Citizen of the Berezovsky District for his labor merits and significant personal contribution to the development of the Belarusian science.
Delegation of NASB Institute of History takes part in International Summer School of Young Archeologists of CIS Member States in Republic of Tajikistan
On 2-8 July 2017, a delegation of the NASB Institute of History took part in the International Summer School of Young Archeologists of CIS Member States on the site of the ancient Hulbuk town in the Republic of Tajikistan. The event was supported by the Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Fund of the CIS member states and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The International Summer School of Young Archeologists gathered together representatives of academic and university science from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.

NAS of Belarus invites to press tour devoted to scientific support of flax industry
The NAS of Belarus invites media representatives to participate in the press tour "Scientific Support of Flax Industry in Belarus" on 14 July 2017 (Friday) at 9:00 a.m. The tour program includes a visit to the Institute of Flax of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (Ustie, Vitebsk Region, Orsha District), acquaintance with the main scientific directions of research, a visit to experimental fields where a high yield was obtained. Communication with flax researchers is planned. In particular, the conversation will focus on the specificity of selection of oil-bearing flax and long-fibred flax, management of the processes of high quality flax fiber formation, the organization of primary seed-growing, etc.
