The research activity of the Department of Biological Sciences is concentrated on study of a biological diversity of plants and animals in Belarus, the development of methods of protection, reproduction and rational use of biological resources in conditions of anthropogenic press. The studies are conducted of genetic and physiological-biochemical mechanisms of photosynthesis, efficiency and immunity of plants, as bases for development of the programs for selection of new high-productive, adapted to Belarus conditions of grades of agricultural cultures and technologies of their cultivation. Physical-chemical mechanisms of functioning of biosystems as a basis of management by ability to live vegetative and animals organisms are also investigated. The special attention is given to study of dynamics of a radioecological conditions in the Republic, caused by accident on the Chernobyl NPP, the behaviour of radionuclides in various ecosystems, an estimation of biological and genetic consequences of radiation action and the development of ways of reduction of its harmful influence.

The Department of Biological Sciences unites the Scientific and Practical Center for Bioresources, 4 research institutes and the Central Botanical Gardens. As of January 2008, there were about 915 researchers, technicians and attendants in the attached scientific organizations. There are 519 researchers, 46 Doctors of Sciences (Prof.) and 194 Candidates of Sciences (Ph.D.) among them.
