The Department of Chemistry and Earth Sciences develops and coordinates the research works in the field of chemistry of polymers and new areas of their application, methods of organic synthesis of substances with valuable properties, chemistry of inorganic materials, physical chemistry of disperse systems, chemistry of proteins, nuclein acids and low-molecular bioregulators. The investigations are also directed on study and determination of ways of practical use of polymer materials with special properties (membrane, thermal-stable and high-adhesive polymers, polyelectrolites, extragents, thin-film materials), new generation means of plants protection, new medicinal preparations and other products of "small chemistry", adsorbents and catalysts, ceramic and composite of materials. On the basis of complex study of a condition of natural environment and forecasting of its change under the influence of natural and anthropogeneous factors, the theoretical basis for functioning and optimization of geoecosystems are developed.

The Department of Chemistry and Earth Sciences unites 2 State Scientific and Production Amalgamations, 5 scientific institutes and centers, whose personnel includes now about 830 researchers, technicians and attendants. There are 16 Academicians, 15 Corresponding Members, about 610 researchers, 53 Doctors of Sciences (Prof.) and about 220 Candidates of Sciences (Ph.D.) among them.
