The Department of Humanitarian Sciences and Arts of NAS of Belarus was created in 1936 as Department of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of BSSR and carries out and coordinates the complex of scientific research in different fields of social sciences and the humanities.

The basic priority directions of scientific research of organizations attached to the Department are: the theoretical-methodological bases of formation in the Republic of Belarus the innovative social-oriented economy, which ensures its steady development in interaction with the world economic system; philosophical-ideological prerequisites and the logical-methodological bases of public progress and social stability, development of personality, culture and formation, formation of the ideology of Belarusian society.

The Department of Humanitarian Sciences and Arts unites 6 scientific institutes: the institutes of philosophy; economics; sociology; history; art study, ethnography and folklore; language and literature. The Department consists of 10 Academicians and 16 Corresponding Members. As of January 2009, there were some 540 researchers and attendants in the attached scientific organizations, including 432 researchers, 65 Doctors of Science and 181 Candidates of Science.
