Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Belarus conducts a survey on the school education system’s assessment

In order to study the attitude of the population of the Republic of Belarus to the school education system, the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Belarus conducted a telephone survey. The study was conducted on June 21 – July 11, 2023 in all regional cities and Minsk, individual district cities and rural settlements. The target sample totaled 900 respondents under the age of 60 (sampling error ± 3.3%).

Assessing the work of the school education system of the Republic of Belarus, 71.7% of the country's citizens spoke about it in a positive way. One in five respondents (20.9%) is neutral about the work of this system, only 5.6% are negative. 1.8% found it difficult to give an answer.

At the same time, the respondents were asked what, in their opinion, the level of educational training of the student depends on. The most important thing the survey participants consider the child’s desire to study responsibly (80.3%). In second place is the level of teachers’ professional training (61.2%), and in third place is the desire of parents themselves to educate their child (48.4%).

The respondents also paid attention to the child's abilities (42.4%), the opportunity to attend free clubs/elective classes (26.2%), the level of education of the child's parents (18.9%) and the material well-being of families in general (14.1%). The "Other" option was chosen by 2.2% of respondents. 1.6% found it difficult to answer.

The respondents’ opinions on how to conduct selection for higher education institutions were distributed as follows: 30.0% of respondents supported the return of school exams and the replacement of centralized testing with classical entrance exams. 21.2% of the survey participants also support the return of exams after graduation, but with the preservation of centralized testing. 16.7% of respondents believe that it is necessary to combine school exams with entrance exams. Only one in ten survey participants (11.7%) is in favor of leaving the centralized exam and centralized testing. 8.7% of respondents believe that it is necessary to replace all centralized testing with centralized exams. The "Other" option was chosen by 2.0% of respondents. The question caused difficulty for 9.8%.

The majority of Belarusians in one way or another has a positive attitude to the introduction of uniform elements of school clothes in educational institutions (vest, tie, badge, etc.): this was stated by 70.4% of respondents. To one degree or another, 26.9% of respondents have a negative attitude to this innovation. Only 2.7% found it difficult to answer.

To a more specific question regarding the introduction of compulsory school uniforms for all students, 69.7% of respondents replied that they support this proposal. 28.6% of respondents would react negatively to such an innovation. 1.7% of the survey participants found it difficult to answer.
