The staff of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the NAS of Belarus organized and conducted two seminars on conduct of matters in conditions of radioactive contamination of territories for agricultural specialists and representatives of peasant households (farms), agricultural and (radio)environmental workers, as well as other interested persons of the Gomiel and Magiliow regions. Employees of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, researchers of the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the NAS of Belarus, of the Institute of Radiobiology of the NAS of Belarus, the Polessky State Radiation and Ecological Reserve, Magiliow and Gomiel Regional Design and Survey Stations of Agricultural Chemicalization, specialists of the departments of agriculture and food of the districts of Magiliow and Gomiel regions regions took part in the seminars with reports and discussions.

The seminar reports provide an analysis of the current state of radioactive contamination and soil fertility of agricultural lands; the methodology for predicting radioactive contamination of crop production is outlined; the coefficients of transition 137Cs and 90Sr from soil to crop production are clarified with the expansion of the list of crops; the principles and agrotechnological features of agriculture in conditions of radioactive contamination are given; modern requirements for radiation safety in agricultural production are outlined.

Familiarization of government bodies’ representatives, district specialists of the agricultural industry and farms representatives with the new developments of scientists will contribute to the practical application of measures to reduce the transfer of radionuclides into feed and food.
