National Agency for Space Research of the NAS of Belarus holds a round table dedicated to the 120th anniversary of S. A. Kosberg’s birth (1903-1965)

From October 4 to 10, the World Space Week is held annually, proclaimed by UN General Assembly resolution 54/68 of December 6, 1999. World Space Week is the largest annual event in the world dedicated to the study of outer space.

Within the framework of the World Space Week, a round table dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Semyon A. Kosberg’s birth was organized at the NAS of Belarus. The guests of the event were students of the Gymnasium No. 1 of Sluck, which Kosberg graduated.

Semyon Arievich Kosberg is a Soviet engineer, an expert in the field of aviation and rocket engines, Doctor of Engineering Science, associate of S. P. Korolev, a Belarusian from the city of Sluck, Minsk region, chief designer of the famous RD-0105 and RD-0109 engines of the third stage of spacecraft. Thanks to his engineering and design talent, for the first time in history, the second cosmic speed of 11 kilometers per second was achieved, which made it possible to overcome the gravitational attraction of the Earth and fly to the vastness of the Universe.

The round table was organized by the National Agency for Space Research of the NAS of Belarus, one of the functions of which is to popularize the space activities of the Republic of Belarus. The round table was aimed at developing children and young people's interest in scientific and research projects in the field of space, promoting the achievements of Belarusian science in space exploration, patriotic education of the younger generation.

The round table was attended by employees of the Department of Space Activities of the NAS of Belarus. Head of the Department of Space Activities of the NAS of Belarus Pyotr Vityaz made a report on the formation and development of the space industry of modern Belarus, Deputy Head of the Department Ivan Bucha told about the implementation of the project on the space flight of a Belarusian citizen to the Russian segment of the International Space Station, Director of the Unitary Enterprise Geoinformation Systems Sergey Zolotoy informed the participants of the round table about the design of spacecraft and the creation of the Belarusian space system of Earth remote sensing, the employee of the Unitary Enterprise Geoinformation Systems Alexandra Smagina made a report Space from Earth and Earth from Space on the use of space information for economic development.

Students of the Gymnasium No. 1 of Sluck presented the results of research on the biography and scientific activity of a native of Belarus, engineer, designer of space technology Semyon A. Kosberg. Young space enthusiasts creatively told how a boy from Sluсk, Semyon Kosberg, born in a provincial family, went from an ordinary worker to the head of a large design bureau for the improvement of aircraft engines, became a significant designer of space technology. The moderator of the event was Irina Kazachok, a leading specialist of the Department of Space Activities.

Chairman of the United Branch Trade Union Organization of Employees of the NAS of Belarus Ivan Baranovsky and Chairman of the Primary Organization of the Public Association Belarusian Women’s Union of the NAS of Belarus Yulia Kochurko aimed the young guests at success, wished inspiration and perseverance in achieving their goals.

Young space researchers and their supervisor, physics teacher of the Gymnasium No. 1 of Sluck, Tatyana Y. Maksimenko and students were presented with books about the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, a satellite image from the Belarusian spacecraft View from Space (Взгляд из космоса) was presented to the Gymnasium No. 1 of Sluck by the Unitary Enterprise Geoinformation Systems.

The Council of Young Scientists of the NAS of Belarus invited schoolchildren to take part in the republican conference The First Step into Science, which will be held from November 20 to 23, 2023. The children were presented with souvenirs that will remind them of their stay in the walls of the highest scientific organization of the country for a long time.

At the end of the round table, the participants visited the exposition of the Museum of History of the NAS of Belarus.
