Roadmap of cooperation between the organizations of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 2023-2025 discussed

On April 27, 2023, on the initiative of the Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, as part of the implementation of the roadmap for cooperation between the organizations of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 2023-2025, a seminar–meeting was held via video link.

Organizers: Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Institute for Environmental Management of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Forest Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and interested organizations of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Academic Secretary of the Department of Biological Sciences of the NAS of Belarus, Corresponding Member, Doctor of Biology, Professor Oleg Y. Baranov opened the event and made a welcoming speech. Then the participants of the seminar were greeted by the Head of the Department of International Cooperation of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Pavel V. Petrov. 6 reports were presented from the Belarusian side, 7 reports from leading scientific institutions were presented from the Karelian side.

The following issues were considered in the reports of the Institute of Experimental Botany:
- The Belarusian experience of limiting the spread of invasive plant species – Sosnowsky's hogweed and Canadian goldenrod (Corresponding Member, Doctor of Biology, Professor Valery N. Prokhorov);
- Experience in digital mapping of vegetation for solving scientific and practical problems of monitoring and forecasting the state of natural ecosystems and biological resources (Cand. Sc. Biology; Associate Professor Dmitry G. Grummo);
- Scientific foundations and practical significance of maintaining the State cadastre of the flora of the Republic of Belarus (Cand. Sc. Biology Oleg M. Maslovsky);
- A model of restoration of the landscape heritage of Belarus on the example of the concept of revitalization of the park of the historical and cultural complex of the Khreptovich Estate in the agro-town of Shchorsy (Cand. Sc. Biology, Associate Professor Irina P. Voznyachuk).

The report from the Institute for Environmental Management of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was devoted to the study of greenhouse gases of swamp ecosystems of Belarus (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics Sergei A. Lysenko); the report from the Forest Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was devoted to the study of the population and genetic structure of economically valuable woody plants in order to improve the strategy of restoration and conservation of forest biodiversity (Corresponding Member, Doctor of Biology Vladimir Y. Padutov).

Representatives of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences considered: the situation with invasive species in the Republic of Karelia; experience in monitoring soil carbon dioxide flows; digital mapping of the land cover of Eastern Fennoscandia; comprehensive study of taiga forest productivity; climate challenge: pro or con for the economy; nature tourism: social and economic effects and institutional constraints; genetic diversity of northern and southern populations of Karelian birch on the example of Karelia (Russia) and Belarus, and ways to preserve it.

As a result of the meeting, it was decided to intensify the work of scientists on the preparation of projects within the framework of the competition of joint Belarusian-Russian scientific projects BRFFR-RSF, programs of the Union State, etc. Concrete steps have been outlined to attract specialists from both sides as lecturers, speakers, as well as for the internship. The Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, at the invitation of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and within the framework of a cooperation agreement with the Institute of Biology, a separate subdivision of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will co–organize the International Symposium Swamps of Northern Eurasia: Biosphere Functions, Diversity and Dynamics (September 25–28, 2023, Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia). Representatives of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences will take part in the Sylvan 2023 Youth Summer School on Forest Phytocenology (July 15–23, 2023, Vojtau Most village, Grodno Region, Republic of Belarus), organized by the Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and other scientific and technical events planned to be held by organizations of the National Academy of Sciences Belarus.
