Press conference on the Day of Belarusian Science held

On January 24, 2023, a press conference dedicated to the Day of Belarusian Science was held at the National Press Center of the Republic of Belarus. The speakers at the event were: Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus, academician; Sergey Shlychkov, Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus; Andrey Ivanets, Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus, and Elena Korotkova, First Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Belarus.

Answering journalists' questions, Vladimir Gusakov noted that the successes in space exploration, the establishment of nuclear energy, developments in the field of medicine and the creation of a line of domestic electric vehicles can be considered breakthrough for Belarusian scientists over the past decade. "Thanks to the Earth remote sensing satellite, which is still flying, we have become a space power, and this is an admitted fact. In addition, Belarus became a nuclear country, and scientific support was provided at all stages of the construction and commissioning of the Belarusian NPP. Moreover, the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research – Sosny of the NAS of Belarus is currently engaged in selecting the territory and justifying the construction of a new station. Developments in the field of medicine and, in particular, the development of a vaccine against COVID is, in fact, work from scratch: Belarus has never been involved in the development of vaccines. We have also never been engaged in electric transport. And now a whole line of the latest technology has been created in various fields – trucks, mini-electric vehicles, an airfield bus, a garbage collector, etc.," the Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus said. Among the significant developments of recent years, Vladimir Gusakov also named the latest plant varieties, achievements in the field of biotechnology, the creation of new materials, etc.

In turn, Chairman of the Italy-Belarus Chamber of Commerce and Industry Angelo Ilardi noted that today it is very important to implement initiatives that can help in the development of dialogue. The round table scheduled to be held at the end of February will contribute to this. At the event, it is planned to discuss such issues as: mechanization of livestock, genetics, digitalization, saving energy resources, etc.

Referring to the results of the work of the National Academy of Sciences in 2023, Vladimir Gusakov recalled that the main measures of scientists' work are the dynamics of the Belarusian economy and the harmonious development of the socio-cultural sphere. In 2023, the NAS of Belarus, as the country's highest scientific organization, continued to provide scientific support and counseling for more than 35 programs, including in the field of fundamental, scientific and technical, and sectoral research.
