Institute of Genetics and Cytology of NAS of Belarus holds Round-table on issue of promoting comprehensive implementation of Cartagena Protocol

On May 25, 2016 the Round-table discussion on the international project "Capacity Building in order to Promote a Comprehensive Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Convention on Biological Diversity at the National Level" was held in connection with the International Day of Biodiversity. The Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the NAS of Belarus which functions as the National Focal Point for Biosafety, with the assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus were the organizers of the event.

Representatives of ministries concerned and other national public institutions, as well as of the national center of the Aarhus Convention of the United Nations on ensuring public participation in the discussion of issues related to the environment, including biosafety issues, and of public organizations dealing with environmental protection in the Republic of Belarus were invited to participate in the discussion of issues of legal regulation of genetic engineering activities and efficiency in the field of biosafety, as well as in the development of proposals for promoting comprehensive implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Convention on Biological Diversity at the national level.

The organizers of the event expressed confidence that the multilateral dialogue would allow to identify practical steps to integrate biosafety issues into national strategic and research plans.
