Representatives of state bodies of the Republic of Belarus, the management and staff of the Petrus Brovka Belarusian Encyclopedia Publishing House, heads of universities departments, the NASB scientists, and literary men participated in the event.
Speakers commended the work of academic scientists, noted its importance in the country’s cultural development. Ihar L. Kapyloŭ, Director of the Yakub Kolas Institute of Linguistics of the NAS of Belarus, emphasized that the new edition continued and developed traditions of the Belarusian lexicography and was focused on reflection of the current state of vocabulary and phraseology of the Belarusian literary language. In recent decades, due to changes in political, economic and cultural life of the country, the vocabulary was greatly enriched with new words that had not yet been recorded and professionally evaluated. Owing to globalization processes in various spheres of life, numerous loanwords have appeared. A significant number of lexical units that have recently been on the periphery of the lexical system are now actively used.
