The International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS) was established in 1993 on the initiative of the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician Boris Evgenievich Paton (1918-2020) with the aim of uniting the efforts of leading scientific organizations and scientists to solve the most important problems of scientific development, identify areas of fundamental and applied research, coordinate the scientific strategies of academies of sciences and major scientific centers of different countries, as well as train scientific personnel, and support the most promising areas of scientific research.
Since 2017, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has been acting as the base academy of sciences in providing organizational and methodological support to the International Academy of Sciences.

The highest governing body is the Council of the International Association of Academies of Sciences.
