Scientific legacy of J. Tyshkievich (on the 210th anniversary of his birth)

April 18, 2024 marks the 210th anniversary of the birth of Jawstafij Tyshkievich, a historian, ethnographer, archaeologist, local historian, collector, creator of the Vilna Archaeological Commission, one of the initiators of the museum affairs in Belarus. Our wonderful countryman was a member of many scientific societies: the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, the Danish Royal Museum of Northern Antiquities, the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities in Stockholm and Royal Archaeological Institute in London.

On April 18, 2024, the Centre for the Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Researches of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Lagojsk District Executive Committee in cooperation with Lagojsk History and Local Studies Museum named after Kanstancin and Jawstafij Tyshkevich and the Republican Center of National Cultures will hold an International Scientific Conference The Scientific Legacy of J. Tyshkievich, dedicated to the 210th anniversary of his birth, in order to perpetuate the memory of the famous scientist J. Tyshkievich, as well as to update his scientific heritage, discuss modern problems of ethnology, folklore, archeology.

The conference will be attended by scientists from Belarus, Russia and China. More than 40 reports will be presented. The high theoretical level of the event will be provided by its participants, representatives of academic science, teachers of higher education, including 10 doctors and 16 candidates of sciences.

Among the topics of the conference are the scientific heritage of J. Tyshkievich; theoretical aspects and problems of the development of ethnological science; problems and prospects of interaction between ethnology and related disciplines (archaeology, folklore, museology, local lore); Belarusian culture in the ethnographic collections of museums in Belarus and abroad; modern ethnocultural processes.

The cultural program of the conference includes a tour of the historical sites of Lagojsk, a visit to the exposition of the Lagojsk History and Local Studies Museum named after Kanstancin and Jawstafij Tyshkevich, a nativity play, and a book presentation.

The holding of the conference in the Lagojsk district, a region of Belarus with a rich historical past, which is famous for its unique traditions of material and spiritual culture, will allow us to draw attention to the positive experience of preserving cultural heritage, which is important for fostering patriotism, respect for the native land, and the development of cooperation between scientists, cultural workers, and teachers.
