Belarusian delegation led by Alexei Trukhanov is participating in the 28th meeting of the Committee on Environmental Protection in Japan

A delegation from Belarus, led by Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences Alexei Trukhanov, took part in the opening ceremony of the 28th meeting of the Committee for Antarctic Environmental Protection (CEP) in Hiroshima, Japan.

During the meeting, key aspects of future work within the CEP were discussed, including establishing fruitful cooperation with other international organizations and implementing projects related to comprehensive environmental assessments in the region. Particular attention was paid to the conservation of unique Antarctic flora and fauna, as well as effective waste management and pollution control in the polar zone.

Preparations are currently underway for the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM), scheduled for May 12 of this year. As part of this event, Belarus intends to submit an application for Consultative Party status.

The Committee for Environmental Protection is a body established in 1998 under Article 11 of the Madrid Protocol (1991) to the Antarctic Treaty. It provides recommendations to the Antarctic Consultative Meetings (ATCMs) on the protection of Antarctica as a "natural reserve devoted to peace and science."
