The 39th meeting of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS) took place today in Chinese Xi'an, hosted by Northwestern Polytechnical University
The event, organized jointly by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the host university, brought together more than a hundred leading scientists.
Representatives from 21 member organizations of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS) across 13 countries gathered to discuss pressing issues in the development of science.
The meeting was chaired by the head of the IAAS, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Karanik.
In his remarks, he emphasized the need to deepen cooperation between the academies and to strengthen the association’s resource base.
In his view, this will make it possible to more fully use the potential of the IAAS (International Association of Academies of Sciences) for fostering an innovation culture within the societies of the member countries. Vladimir Karanik also noted that Belarus remains committed to a policy of openness, integration, and equitable scientific cooperation, advocating for the shared use of research and development results based on the principles of mutual respect and practical benefit.
"The importance of science for the development of society, as well as for ensuring security and technological independence, is today indisputable and beyond any doubt. This is precisely why the leaders of many nations pay close attention to the scientific sphere and to enhancing its effectiveness. In Belarus, this approach is a priority; it has been emphasized repeatedly at the highest level that achieving sustainable development is impossible without a strong scientific sector," said the head of the Academy of Sciences.
During the meeting, important decisions were made, including the expansion of the MAAN membership. Two new organizations joined the association: Henan Academy of Sciences and Northwestern Polytechnical University.
The International Association of Academies of Sciences was established in 1993 with the aim of uniting the efforts of leading scientific organizations and scholars to address critical issues in scientific development, coordinate the scientific strategies of academies of sciences and major research centers across different countries, and train scientific personnel. Since 2017, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has served as the base academy of sciences, providing organizational and methodological support to the IAAS.
