National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Belarusian Union of Women to hold round table discussion "Genetics to women”

On 30 November 2018 (Friday), a round-table discussion "Genetics to women" will be held at the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the NAS of Belarus at 14:00. The event is organized by the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Belarusian Union of Women.

Leading scientists-geneticists of the country and members of the female medics club Credo of the Belarusian Union of Women will take part in the round-table discussion. These are the chief doctors of clinics and hospitals, republican scientific and practical centres of Minsk, representatives of the regions. The participants of the round table will discuss such issues as "Nutrigenomics: a new direction of personalized medicine" and "Determination of individual genetic characteristics of a person is a step into the future".

The Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the NAS of Belarus has accumulated vast scientific and practical experience in the field of human genetics. More than 35,000 tests are performed annually to determine the genetic susceptibility to multifactorial diseases, miscarriage, genetic causes of male infertility, etc.

Worldwide, genetics is becoming the basis for the prevention and treatment of diseases. The advantage of genetic diagnosis is that it makes it possible to identify the propensity for a particular disease long before its clinical manifestations, to take preventive measures in time, preventing the development or facilitating the course of the disease. The modern approach to the treatment of diseases should also be carried out taking into account the individual genetic characteristics of a person. In turn, nutrigenomics becomes a new direction of personalized medicine. Nutrition ideally should be based on the individual characteristics of the body. What people who live in a particular area eat depends not only on the availability of food resources, cultural traditions and technological achievements but also on the genetically determined ability to absorb a particular type of food.
