Presentation of collective monograph “Monitoring of flora in the Republic of Belarus: results and prospects” to de hold on 4 March

On 4 March at 18:30, employees of the V.F. Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus will present the collective monograph “Monitoring of flora in the Republic of Belarus: results and prospects” which was published in January 2019 in the Publishing House “Belaruskaya Navuka”. The presentation will be held at the Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library of the NAS of Belarus.

The last decades, which have become a turning point for humanity in socio-political and technological relations, have brought many changes in the sphere of nature management and nature protection. Trends in nature and society confirm the urgent need for a system of observations of the environment state, the most important component of which is the flora. Although the level of anthropogenic impact on forests, swamps, meadows, water in the territory of the Republic of Belarus in the past 20-25 years has significantly decreased, the transformation of natural vegetation continues because of climate change, globalization, infrastructure development, invasion of foreign organisms, radical changes in the structure of land use, and continuing deforestation. These processes of different intensity, scale and direction, require constant monitoring and timely response to their negative manifestations. There is a growing need for information on the state of flora, vegetation and plant resources to justify management and design decisions. Monitoring is becoming the main tool for assessing the effectiveness of restrictions and prohibitions imposed on specially protected natural areas and individual objects of flora. The development of information and remote technologies, simplification of access to the latest achievements of science opened new opportunities in this direction. To meet the information needs of the treatment of flora in the Republic of Belarus within the framework of the National system of environmental monitoring, a system of observations has been formed. This system comprehensively solves the problem of monitoring flora condition.

In accordance with the Law of the Republic of Belarus "On environmental protection" (article 7), "ensuring the continuous functioning of the National system of environmental monitoring in the Republic of Belarus" is one of the main directions of the state policy in the field of environmental protection. Flora monitoring is a system of long-term and regular observations of the state of plants and their growing environment, as well as assessment and prediction of their changes in order to preserve biological diversity, ensure the sustainable state and scientifically sound use of objects of the plant world.

The monograph was prepared by a team of authors representing various organizations (the V.F.Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany of the NAS of Belarus; the Institute of Forest of the NAS of Belarus; Belarusian State University), which are responsible for the conduct of certain areas of monitoring of flora as part of the National system of environmental monitoring in the Republic of Belarus.

The monograph presents the main results of observations and assessment of the state of flora in seven areas of flora monitoring. Authors summarize work to monitor and study the condition of the plant world, discuss topical issues of monitoring of meadow, aquatic and marsh vegetation, resource-based, malicious, alien and protected species of plants, protection of urban green plantings and their solutions.

The book is intended for employees of public administration, specialists in the field of environmental protection and the use of natural resources, researchers and teachers of higher education working in the field of biology and ecology, readers interested in environmental problems. The results can be used in the examination of the ecological state of flora, environmental impact assessment of planned and existing construction and the development of operational (for consideration in the design) and perspective (for consideration in the process of operation) recommendations to minimize the impact on biodiversity in the construction area.

We invite all stakeholders to the information and exhibition center of the Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library (15 Surganova str., first floor, room 110). Beginning at 18.30.
