Extended meeting of NASB Presidium Bureau held
On 27 July 2017, an extended meeting of the Bureau of the NASB Presidium was held. It aimed to discuss implementation of the indicators of the social and economic development forecast for the last 6 months by the NASB organizations. Foreign economic activity for this period was also characterized.
Nadezhda Stepanova, Head of Planning and Finance Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, made a keynote report concerning implementation of the indicators of the social and economic development forecast. On the whole, it was noted that in the first half of the year, the organizations of the Academy of Sciences had reached a positive balance in the foreign trade in goods and services. Attention was drawn to the optimal use of all possible sources of funding for scientific research.
Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of NASB Presidium, meets with Minister of Forestry and Water Resources of Turkey
Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the NASB Presidium, met with Veysel Eroğlu, Minister of Forestry and Water Resources of Turkey, Co-chairman of the Belarusian-Turkish Joint Intergovernmental Economic Commission, and with representatives of the Ministry.
Veysel Eroğlu showed interest in the development of the Academy’s pharmacologists in the field of medicines and dietary supplements, and the cultivation of natural raw materials for their production. He was also interested in the Belarusian experience in the field of energy, forestry technology, protection of forest lands, and water and air purification.
Vladimir Gusakov suggested to formulate directions for further cooperation between the parties in the near future.
Meeting with representatives of Roscosmos State Corporation held at NAS of Belarus
At the meeting of the NASB leadership and representatives of Roscosmos State Corporation, held on 27 July 2017, the results of the five years of Belarusian spacecraft in-orbit operation were summed up, and details of creation of a new Russian-Belarusian spacecraft were discussed.
According to Petr Vityaz, Head of the NASB apparatus, the cost of a new satellite is forecast to be about $ 180 million. Technical parameters of the satellite have already been agreed upon. The platform is under development now. Petr Vityaz considers this innovative project to be able to expand the scope of space information applications. The satellite launch is planned for 2020-2021. The technical characteristics of the satellite will be improved in comparison with the current Belarusian spacecraft. This will significantly expand the range of tasks to be solved.
Meeting of NASB leadership and representatives of Roscosmos State Corporation to be held on July 27, 2017
On 27 July 2017 (Thursday), a meeting of the NASB leadership and representatives of the Roscosmos State Corporation will be held in the Presidium of the NAS of Belarus (praspiekt Niezaliežnasci 66). The meeting will be dedicated to the five years of successful in-orbit operation of the Belarusian spacecraft.
The meeting aims at discussing issues of scientific and technical cooperation on space research in the field of peaceful space exploration, creation and tasks of a new Russian-Belarusian spacecraft for remote Earth sensing of high-resolution.
NAS of Belarus and Korea Institute of Science and Technology sign Memorandum of Understanding
On 24 July 2017, Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the NASB Presidium, and Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, President of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the NAS of Belarus and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). Before signing the Memorandum, the sides exchanged information on the scientific institutions represented and discussed the areas of further cooperation and joint research. In particular, they discussed the prospects of creating a joint laboratory or a scientific center, and the scientific cadres exchange. The Parties agreed to make a list of promising research projects and topics of mutual interest in the near future.
Working meeting of Interdepartmental Commission of Republic of Belarus on Antarctic Issues held at NAS of Belarus
On 19 July 2017, a working meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission of the Republic of Belarus on Antarctic Issues was held at the NAS of Belarus. As its outcome, a decision was made to strengthen the scientific part of the tenth expedition and to fill its activities with relevant scientific projects.
Before the beginning of the working meeting, Aleksei Gaidashov, Head of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition, said that Belarus plans to receive the status of an advisory party in the international Antarctic Treaty. The status gives the right to vote and to participate in the development and adoption of decisions concerning the present and future of Antarctica.
Lecture on somatic mutations in human cells to be given by Professor Alexej Abyzov (USA) in NASB United Institute of Informatics Problems
On 19 July, at 2:30 p.m., a lecture devoted to definition and analysis of somatic mutations in human cells will be given by Professor Alexej Abyzov (Mayo Clinic, USA) in the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the NAS of Belarus (Minsk, vul. Surhanava, 6, room 206).
The presence of genomic changes in individual cells of the human body, that is, somatic mutations, has been known for a long time. But only a few years ago, due to development of a number of biotechnologies, their study acquired mass and systematic character.
Extended working meeting of Interdepartmental Commission of Republic of Belarus on Antarctic Issues to be held at NAS of Belarus
On 20 July 2017, an extended working meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission of the Republic of Belarus on Antarctic Issues will be held at the NAS of Belarus.
The meeting is to review the implementation of the Activities Plan on performing the Agreement on Cooperation in the Antarctic between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Russian Federation in 2016-2017, to discuss plans for scientific and logistical cooperation for 2017-2018, including those within the framework of the 10th Belarussian and the 63rd Russian Antarctic Expeditions.
Head of NASB apparatus Petr A. Vityaz conferred title of Honorary Citizen of Berezovsky District
According to the decision of the Berezovsky District Council of Deputies, Petr Aleksandrovich Vityaz, Head of the NASB apparatus, Academician, Doctor of Technical Sciences, scientist in the area of new materials, technologies and engineering development, Honoured Scientist of the BSSR, has been conferred the title of Honorary Citizen of the Berezovsky District for his labor merits and significant personal contribution to the development of the Belarusian science.
Delegation of NASB Institute of History takes part in International Summer School of Young Archeologists of CIS Member States in Republic of Tajikistan
On 2-8 July 2017, a delegation of the NASB Institute of History took part in the International Summer School of Young Archeologists of CIS Member States on the site of the ancient Hulbuk town in the Republic of Tajikistan. The event was supported by the Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Fund of the CIS member states and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The International Summer School of Young Archeologists gathered together representatives of academic and university science from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.
NAS of Belarus invites to press tour devoted to scientific support of flax industry
The NAS of Belarus invites media representatives to participate in the press tour "Scientific Support of Flax Industry in Belarus" on 14 July 2017 (Friday) at 9:00 a.m. The tour program includes a visit to the Institute of Flax of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (Ustie, Vitebsk Region, Orsha District), acquaintance with the main scientific directions of research, a visit to experimental fields where a high yield was obtained. Communication with flax researchers is planned. In particular, the conversation will focus on the specificity of selection of oil-bearing flax and long-fibred flax, management of the processes of high quality flax fiber formation, the organization of primary seed-growing, etc.
Agreement on Cooperation with Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China ISTIC signed
On 10-12 July 2017, meetings with the leadership of the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China ISTIC (Beijing, PRC) were held. This is a leading state institution responsible for informing the government of the PRC about the latest achievements in the scientific and technical sphere, and the formation of proposals on the PRC development directions in the field of science and technology. During the meetings, issues of cooperation with the NASB United Institute of Informatics Problems in the field of information-analytical systems, super-computer technologies and application of medical informatics methods were discussed. An Agreement on Cooperation in these fields of science was signed.
Days of Belarusian Science, Innovations, Investments in Astana resulted in number of agreements
On 5–6 July 2017, the Days of Belarusian Science, Innovations and Investments took place as part of the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO 2017 held in Astana. An international conference on future energy, innovative technologies and methods for their implementation, as well as an international conference on export opportunities and services in education, health and investment projects were held in the framework of the Days.
During the negotiations, a number of agreements were reached in the field of equipment and technologies sales, as well as in higher education and scientific cooperation, including joint work on the use of Belarusian innovative technologies.
Laureate Diploma of Academician F.I.Fedorov Prize awarded
On 10 July 2017, Vladimir Gusakov, Chairman of the NASB Presidium, solemnly handed the Laureate Diploma of Academician F.I.Fedorov Prize for 2017 to Alexander Nizovtsev, Leading Researcher of the B.I.Stepanov Institute of Physics of the NAS of Belarus, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics. The prize was awarded by the resolution of the NASB Presidium No. 41 of June 26, 2017.
The Academician F.I.Fedorov Prize is one of the most prestigious personal awards of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. It is awarded once in three years. In 2017, the prize was awarded for a series of works "Study of the Photophysical and Spin Characteristics of NV Centers in Diamond for Applications in Quantum Technologies." In the course of the research, previously unknown data for a purposeful search of nuclear spins of 13C isotopic atoms with long coherence times even at room temperature have been obtained. This is important for creating solid-state quantum computers based on diamond, as well as new high-precision quantum sensors for measuring local magnetic and electric fields.
Member of the United States House of Representatives Christopher Smith to visit Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of NAS of Belarus
On July 7, 2017 Christopher Smith, the member of the United States House of Representatives, co-chair of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, is going to visit the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the NAS of Belarus to get acquainted with the achievements of Belarusian science and to discuss the possibility of developing Belarusian-American cooperation in cellular technologies. The Congressman arrived in Minsk as a part of the US Parliamentary delegation to take part in the session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly from 4 to 8 July 2017.
General meeting of Republican Association of Nanoindustry is held in NAS of Belarus
On July 5, 2017 the General meeting of the Republican Association of Nanoindustry (RANI) was held in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The delegation of RUSNANO Group (Russia), led by the Chief Executive Officer of the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs RUSNANO Andrey G. Svinarenko, representatives of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry, the State Standard of the Republic of Belarus and business structures took part in the meeting. Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Semashko addressed before the participants of the meeting. With regard to the topic of cooperation between Belarus and Russia in the sphere of science, Vladimir Semashko said: "Our strategy in scientific and technological innovation coincides. Promising areas of cooperation lie in implementing joint projects in the energy sector, searching for alternative energy sources, producing new materials for industry, building, medicine and agriculture. Belarus has accumulated great experience in creating electronic and optical systems of the target hardware. We see great prospects in joint development of space technologies".
Agreement on creation of Belarusian-Chinese Philosophical and Cultural Center signed
A delegation from Lingnan University (Guangdong province, China) led by Vice-Rector Mrs Lang Yangjie has visited Minsk. The main attention during the visit was paid to the acquaintance with the achievements and potential of the Belarusian academic school of thought, the study of the cooperation mechanisms of Lingnan University with the Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Belarus. This work is aimed at implementing the agreement reached in March this year between the rector of the University, Professor Liu Mingui and the Chairman of the NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov, when it was decided to create a joint unit for studying the philosophical traditions of the two countries and their role in modern social development on the basis of cooperation between the NASB Institute of Philosophy and Chinese authoritative scientific and educational center.
Nanotechnology Week - 2017 to be held in National Academy of Sciences of Belarus
From 4 to 7 July 2017, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus holds a "Nanotechnology Week – 2017" dedicated to the Year of Science in Belarus.
The events will be attended by the delegation of RUSNANO Group (Russia), headed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs RUSNANO Andrey G. Svinarenko. During the negotiations with the Russian side, the issues of expanding the scientific- technological and industrial relations of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, the implementation of joint projects and the prospects for supplying Belarusian nanoproducts to the Russian market will be discussed.
