On the 26th of May, 2020, the National Press Centre of the Republic of Belarus hosted the press conference on the topic “Scientific support of chemical industry development” confined to the Day of Chemist.
Andrey Ivanets, the Chief Scientific Secretary of the NASB, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Academician Vladimir Agabekov, the Head of the Department of Thin Film Material Physics and Chemistry of the State Scientific Institution Institute of Chemistry of New Materials of the NASB, Honorary Director of the Institute of Chemistry of New Materials of the NASB, and Svetlana Babitskaya, the Director of the State Scientific Institution Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the NASB were the speakers at the event.
Andrey Ivanets told the reporters: “We have reoriented our research activities in many aspects to struggle with the coronavirus infection. The NAS have developed a comprehensive scientific research plan which includes developments made by almost all our departments. We are planning to work on new potentially efficient anti-coronavirus medicines using techniques of bioinformatics and supercomputing systems. It helps significantly reduce time of search of chemical compounds, their synthesis and tests,” Alexander Ivanets said.
Academician Vladimir Agabekov told about collaborative work of the scientists and manufacturers.
Speaking of creation of new drugs, Svetlana Babitskaya, the Director of the State Scientific Institution Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the NASB, stressed: “Together with the Ministry of Health, the scientists carried out the program of pharmaceutical industry development. It is this program that now is used to complete development of two anti-cancer drugs”. Scientific and Practical Centre HimFarmSintez for small-capacity production of high-technology pharmaceutical substances was founded based on the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry.
