On February 15, 2022, the jubilee 20,000 genetic passport was issued at the Republican Center for Genomic Biotechnologies of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
The Karpinsky family from Oshmyany came to the center to get a passport. Everyone in the family received genetic passports: the mother, then the little daughter, and now the father of the family. According to the parents, it was thanks to the help of Belarusian geneticists that a child appeared in the family. Then it was decided to check if the girl had the sports talents, and now her father has also undergone DNA testing.
Since 2011, based on our own scientific developments, human genetic testing services have been provided in the following areas: the DNA diagnostics of the genetic predisposition to the human diseases to form high-risk groups among the population, verify the diagnosis and choose the right treatment methods; DNA testing in sports for targeted selection of promising athletes and correction of the effects of unfavorable gene variants.
The scientists of the Institute have developed DNA diagnostic methods for 19 socially significant diseases, including such common ones as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. A DNA technology has been introduced to determine the risk of miscarriage associated with hereditary thrombophilia. A survey of 1000 patients with established genetic causes of the miscarriage, and who received appropriate treatment, showed the successful birth of children in 86.6% of cases. The range of services provided is constantly expanding. In 2018 – 2019 services for determining kinship, lactose and gluten intolerance have been mastered and are being successfully provided. In 2020, a quantitative method for assessing the risk of miscarriage was introduced.
Every year, the Republican Center for Genomic Biotechnologies of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus performs over 20,000 analyzes in the direction of the medical genetics.
