National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Center for Molecular Immunology of Cuba discussed ways of cooperation

On May 27, 2022, a working meeting of the representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus headed by the Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Alexander Kilchevsky with the leadership of the Center for Molecular Immunology (CMI) of Cuba was held via videoconference, the purpose of which was to discuss the promising areas and mechanisms for the joint activities.

From the Academy of Sciences, the event was attended by Andrey Goncharov, Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering, Alexey Yantsevich, Deputy Director for Research of the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Luiza Belyaeva, Leading Specialist of the Main Directorate for International Scientific and Technical Cooperation of the Office of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. From the Cuban side, the video conference was attended by Calet Leon, Deputy Director General of the CMI for Research, Development and Entrepreneurship, and Luis Enrique Fernandez, Senior Research Fellow of the CMI.

During the negotiations, the parties expressed the great interest in establishing cooperation between the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and CMI, and also noted the significant potential for its development. Among the possible promising areas for organizing Belarusian-Cuban cooperation, the following areas were identified: development of the new cellular products for the treatment of human diseases, including those from induced pluripotent stem cells; development of the new generation vaccines against human infectious diseases, creation and production of the innovative anti-cancer DNA vaccines using artificial gene synthesis technology, application of the high-performance analytical methods (proteomics and metabolomics) to optimize production processes for obtaining the biosimilars of the therapeutically significant monoclonal antibodies.

At the end of the meeting, the Belarusian side conveyed the invitation of the Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov to visit the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus by a group of the scientists of the Center to get acquainted with the activities of specialized organizations and discuss concrete steps to initiate and implement joint projects in the near future, which was accepted with gratitude. In turn, the Cuban colleagues invited Belarusian scientists to take part in specialized conferences organized by the Center, scheduled for October 2022.
