On January 13, 2023, the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus approved the results of the competition Scientist of the Year of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus 2022, held by a Commission of Experts, and decided to award the title Scientist of the Year of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus 2022 to the Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Belarusian State Medical University, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Corresponding Member Igor Aleksandrovich Karpov.
The scientist was awarded the high title for his significant personal contribution to the development of scientific research in the field of clinical medicine, the development and implementation of innovative methods for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, achievements in the training of highly qualified scientific personnel.
Igor Aleksandrovich Karpov is a well–known scientist in the field of viral and bacterial infections, their diagnosis and etiotropic therapy. The main scientific works of fundamental and applied nature are devoted to the study of clinical features of topical infectious diseases, the development and implementation of new optimal approaches in the treatment of HIV infection, chronic viral hepatitis, influenza, COVID-19, bacterial and viral sepsis, neuroinfections, nosocomial complications. Under his leadership, the etiological structure of HIV was studied and the etiotropic therapy of this disease was modified, for the first time in the CIS, a system of providing medical care to patients with HIV infection on the basis of infectious hospitals was created. New data on the structure of neuroinfections have been obtained, new clinical forms of the course of diseases in the Republic of Belarus have been established. Principles of etiotropic therapy of bacterial diseases, viral and bacterial sepsis, influenza, COVID-19 have been developed and included in national protocols.
He has been Deputy Head of the Republican Interdepartmental Working Group on Overcoming COVID-19 since 2020, actively participates in organizing and holding meetings, has repeatedly presented scientific reports on topical issues of diagnosis and treatment of patients with coronavirus infection, disease prevention.
Igor Aleksandrovich Karpov is the author of more than 500 scientific papers, including 4 monographs, 9 collective publications, more than 20 instructions for use, 30 inventor's certificates. He has trained 3 doctors and 9 candidates of sciences. Scientific consultant of 3 doctoral dissertations and scientific supervisor of 3 candidate’s dissertations.
Karpov is a member of the European Society of Clinical Microbiologists and Infectious Diseases, the International Organization for the Rational Use of Antibiotics, the Eastern European Academy for HIV/AIDS, Steering Committee on HIV/AIDS EuroSIDA. Chief freelance infectious disease specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. Chairman of the Council for the Defense of Dissertations Д 03.18.04 at the Belarusian State Medical University. Member of the editorial boards of 6 scientific publications.
