Professor Yakub Ottonovich Narkevich-Iodko (December 27, 1847 (January 8, 1848) — December 19, 1905) is a prominent figure in the history of science of the XIX century. His popularity in scientific circles was compared by contemporaries with the popularity of Louis Pasteur and Camille Flammarion in France, and some of his scientific research with the experiments of Wilhelm. Roentgen. His name was often found on the pages of Russian and European scientific publications in the XIX century, and in 1896 a book dedicated to the life and scientific activity of Y. O. Narkevich-Iodko was published in Paris. Scientific research of Y. O. Narkevich-Iodko were conducted at the junction of a number of areas — physics, meteorology, medicine and psychology. They were significantly ahead of time, which did not allow the scientist to fully understand and evaluate his undoubted contribution to the development of many sciences during his lifetime. The exhibition will feature some publications by Y. O. Narkevich-Iodko, books, popular science articles devoted to the life of a talented scientist, as well as the results of his experiments and an assessment of the main achievements of the scientist, both by his contemporaries and from the standpoint of science of the XX–XXI centuries.
Traditionally, on Open Days, the library organizes sightseeing tours and guided tours of the exhibition in the reading room of the Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts. Our guests will be shown the rarest editions from the library's collections: Western European books of the XV century (incunabula), editions from the book collection of the Radziwills of the Nesvizh ordination, Cyrillic editions of the XVI–XVIII centuries, Western European and Russian scientific literature of the same period, etc.
