V. F. Kuprevich (24.01.1897, Kalniki village, Smaliavičy district, Minsk region — 17.03.1969) – botanist, statesman and public figure. Academician (1952), Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1953), Doctor of Biology (1942), Professor (1950). Participant of the Great October Socialist Revolution. Hero of Socialist Labor (1969). 1951–1955 — deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR, 1954–1969 — deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Honored Scientist of the BSSR (1967). He was awarded: the Order of the Badge of Honor (1953), the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1957), the Order of Lenin (1967, 1969), medals. Since 1938 he was the Head of the laboratory, since 1949 Director of the Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, 1952–1969 – President of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR and simultaneously since 1953 he became the Head of the Department of the Institute of Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR, since 1958 — Head of the Department of Physiology and Systematics of Lower Plants of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR. He is the author of more than 100 scientific papers, including 7 monographs. In 1972, the Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was named after V. F. Kuprevich.
By tradition, a rally dedicated to the memory of the scientist was held at the Maskoŭskaje Cemetery, which was attended by employees of the Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and students of the V. F. Kuprevich Smaliavičy Secondary School No. 1.
After the rally, young scientists conducted familiarization tours of the Institute for students of the V. F. Kuprevich Smaliavičy Secondary School No. 1. The students visited the laboratories of mycology, water exchange and photosynthesis of plants, flora and systematics of plants, as well as the Herbarium and the permanent exhibition of the Herbarium of the Institute. Then they were shown a film about their famous countryman, which tells about the academician's life path.
A tour to the exhibition of scientific and technical achievements Intellectual Belarus was also organized for children.
On the same day, senior researcher of the Laboratory of Flora and Plant Systematics A.N. Skuratovich gave a lecture History and Modernity: From Kuprevich to the Present Day for students of grades 9–11 of the Aziaryckaslabadskaja Secondary School (Minsk region, Smaliavičy district, agrotown Slabada).
There was also a meeting of the organizing committee of the International Scientific Conference Problems of Experimental Botany: Kuprevich Readings, where topics were discussed and lecturers were assigned to speak at the next XIV Kuprevich readings next year.
