Scientific and practical seminar The Contribution of Women Scientists to The Development of Scientific Knowledge held, dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

On February 14, 2023, the Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus hosted a scientific and practical seminar The Contribution of Women Scientists to The Development of Scientific Knowledge, dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, where the importance of women's participation in the production of scientific knowledge in various branches of national science was discussed.

The chairman of the primary organization of the Belarusian Women’s Union of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Yu.V. Kochurko delivered a welcoming speech to the participants of the seminar, congratulated on this significant date, outlined the relevance of popularizing the contribution of women scientists and wished everyone creative success and new scientific discoveries. The seminar was opened with the report Women Scientists of Academic and University science of the Republic of Belarus by the researcher of the Migration Monitoring Center of Scientific and Scientific-Pedagogical Personnel of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus A.P. Solovey, which highlighted the representation of women among researchers of the Republic of Belarus and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, including among candidates and doctors of sciences; the dynamics of women researchers in the fields of sciences; the proportion of women among postgraduates and doctoral students, depending on the Department of Sciences at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. According to the results of sociological research, attention was focused on the motivation of young women coming to science, professional self-identification of women scientists; the importance for them of professional, family and social value orientations, typological groups of women scientists.

E.V. Presnyakova, Head of the Center for Innovation and Investment Policy of the Institute of Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, in her report The Contribution of Women Scientists to Economics, told in historical retrospect about the significant achievements of women in the economic sector, as well as about the participation of women not only in the development of scientific knowledge, but also their social activity.

Kaltovich I.V., Head of the Complex Meat Products Research Sector of the Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, presented the main activities of the Institute, the contribution of women scientists to the innovative developments of the organization (3D food printing and vegetable analogues of products alternative to meat and dairy). Her colleague Shakel T.P., Head of the Food Innovation Center, told about the development of fermented milk products. A tasting of 3D meat products and dairy products made using bacterial starter cultures produced by Institute of Meat and Dairy Industry was held.

Garlinskaya M.I., Junior Researcher of the Confectionery Industry Sector of the Confectionery and Fat-and-Oil Products Technology Department of the Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on Food, who presented a report on the topic Contribution of Women Scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus to the Development of the Food Industry, said that the development of cookies enriched with vitamins A, E, D and calcium for nutrition of preschool and school-age children has begun; marmalade with collagen and candies with whey protein concentrate are produced, as well as jelly candies with fillings using modified starch with the addition of concentrated juice; scientific research is being conducted on the use of secondary raw materials in confectionery production. Participants were asked to taste new types of cookies and evaluate their qualities by filling out tasting sheets.

N.G. Shabalina, Head of the Department of Library and Information Services of the Central Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, prepared for the event an exhibition The Riddle of Salamey Pilshtynova from the Rusetski family (1718 – after 1760), dedicated to the first female doctor in Eastern Europe; the popular science film Salamey Rusetskaya. The Adventures of My Life was also shown.
The seminar aroused active interest, the participants expressed a desire to hold scientific and practical events in the future to popularize the contribution of women scientists to science.
