On March 29, 2023, a branch of the Kurchatov Institute of the Russian Federation was opened on the basis of the Physical-Technical Institute.
The event was held within the framework of the Congress of Young Scientists of Belarus and Russia. The ceremony was attended by Dmitry Mezentsev, State Secretary of the Union State; Boris Gryzlov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Belarus, President of the Kurchatov Institute Mikhail Kovalchuk, heads of ministries and departments, leading scientists of the two countries, participants of the Congress of Young Scientists.
Mikhail Kovalchuk noted: "We have prepared a draft strategy for the scientific and technological development of the Union State. The construction of such a scientific space with access to megasience complexes located in Russia is going very fast. Already today we have received applications for joining it from a number of former republics of the USSR. It will house laboratories for megascience projects, ionizing radiation detectors, innovative technologies in microelectronics, laboratories for genetic, as well as socio-humanitarian and cognitive research." Vladimir Gusakov stressed that such large scientific centers of the Russian Federation as Skolkovo and branches of the Russian Academy of Sciences will also participate in this scientific infrastructure. "We have material resources, personnel and the necessary research base so that the Union State can lead the world in a number of areas," Vladimir Gusakov said. As it was noted, the branch will play an important role in ensuring the technological sovereignty of our countries in the conditions of the sanctions economy.
